Have you ever wanted to live closer to your food but not known where to start? Then this class is for you! This is a basic introduction to homesteading, which means having a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. Homesteading can include growing your own produce and raising your own animals for meat or other products. This class will cover a range of activities possible in the area even if you just have a small yard at home!

We will start by doing a brief tour of my farm, including meeting the free ranging chickens, scoping out the activity in the bee hives, and saying hello to the small flock of dairy goats and their guard dogs. Each part of the tour will include tips for raising these animals, warnings, and potential products you can use and make.

Then we will sit down on the picnic tables underneath the elm trees and discuss the nitty gritty of homesteading. I'll go over tips on a variety of topics - from how to make the most of your land, deciding what crops to grow or animals to raise, and how to make a profit homesteading. Handouts included and questions welcomed.
Other things to note
There are domestic animals as well as wild animals on the farm. Our guard dogs give loud, warning barks that can be scary, but they are completely safe around people. You will encounter bugs, including spiders and ants. Parking is uncovered and limited.

After traveling across the globe, I decided the greatest way to live sustainably was to put down roots. I fell in love with ten acres and have been living and learning from my property for 12 years. I run a small permaculture-inspired farm that produces and sells eggs, honey (and hive products), fruits, vegetables, and herbs. I've learned a lot - mostly from mistakes - and am happy to share my knowledge so that others can experience success. In addition to being a certified permaculture designer, I've taken horticulture and entomology courses, and worked on several other permaculture farms. I'm also a certified science teacher, so I have the academic background to support my experiments in farming and homesteading, as well as a structured and comprehensive approach to teaching.

Amazing experience! Sarah has a background in tracing and it clearly shows. Loved not only getting a tour of her homestead, but also getting a full education around the process, how it’s evolved, and a glimpse of what it’ll look like for the future! Very eye opening.

Sarah's homestead was a peaceful retreat from the city. I left very inspired to have my own, and got some resources to check out. It's nice to see in person and her goats are so cute. Oh and her fluffy goat-protecting dog is angelic.

There is something healing about this place. Less than an hour out of town and we were immersed in another world, a natural haven for souls seeking rest and communion with the divine in nature; enter Shamba. It was our good fortune that the sky opened up in a blanket of blue and the trees whispered by the gentle breeze as we walked the property. Sarah connects with you at the soul level, small talk aside, it's about getting deep with yourself and sharing that depth as you interact with her. If you're looking to be treated like royalty and wowed by how neat and well kept the garden is, find a different experience. Here, you get real raw wild genuine love. This is what it takes to really do this homesteading thing! There are so many layers to be uncovered with this experience depending on the season you choose to go. For us we got to catch the early peach blossom bloom (clingstone right Sarah?). But as we were taught, the other varieties will bloom later, all this by design so that the harvest season is extended. This one class is simply not enough! This is a master's course on how to be self-sustaining from the location of all the elements to the structure and material of the home. We happen to be interested in urban homesteading so the information provided was super helpful. Even if you're not interested in homesteading, growing your own food, raising livestock, or anything to do with this kind of lifestyle, just being here makes one more curious ;) . Sarah made us feel welcomed and empowered to do this on our own one day. We will definitely have to come back with updates on how we implemented what we learned in our own small natural haven! If you're lucky (like we were) maybe you'll get a treat at the end :) peace & love

Stayed in the guesthouse with my mom, and it was so much fun! The view of the stars at night is incredible. The animals on the property, the garden, and the property itself are just great. Sarah is so super friendly and caring and genuinely welcome. If you're ever in the Austin area, you need to stop by. P.S. the fresh eggs she leaves for you are OFF THE CHAIN.

My daughter and I loved being able to experience living on a sustainable farm/homestead. Sarah was so welcoming and generous with her knowledge and experiences with homesteading. We were able to feed the goats, walk through the chicken coop and have some hands on experience of what daily life is like on a homestead. I would highly recommend this experience to someone interested in learning about homesteading and how to begin. Sarah provides a small syllabus of bullet points that you take home with some added resources cited to help you dive deeper into the subject for yourself. My daughter and I felt that we left this experience with a great new resource of information.

We had a wonderful time at Sarah’s property! We came in knowing very little and learned a lot. You can tell Sarah comes from a teaching background and really loves what she does. We enjoyed learning about the chickens, bee hives and meeting the goats (and their adorable guard dogs)! Definitely recommend for a fun and unique learning experience!
