Au programme

There are 3 main areas of interest: Majengo Crafts Market, Gikomba market and a nearby slum. Majengo Crafts Market has more than 100 workshops belonging to individual artisans. The artisans work in groups of 3 - 5 in each workshop, and each artisan is endowed with a particular skill to carve a specific item. Majengo is mainly a crafts wholesale market, where retailers and exporters buy their stock. It is however isolated from other crafts markets in Nairobi due to it's location in a slum. You will first tour the workshop where I work, where a piece of raw wood will be converted to a utility product in a matter of minutes. You will interact with us deeply, film our work and ask questions. We will then tour the other workshops briefly as you see the products on display. Here you can also buy gifts directly from producers at prices impossible to find elsewhere, thus promoting artisans and eliminating exploitative middlemen. We can also set up a structure for any guest willing to sell our products at home and offer wholesale prices. Just outside the gate is a slum where we will take a 20 minutes stroll, to give you a feeling of slum life. We will wind our trip by taking a walk in Gikomba market, where used clothes are sold, and is also a beehive of other small businesses. This will give you a clear picture of a typical Nairobian, who is diligently working hard to make ends meet.

Habil

My passion for meeting people from around the world made me undertake a Tour Guide course. This was fulfilled in 2001 when I got a Tour Guide job until in 2008 when I lost the job due to less tourists visiting Kenya as a result of post election violence in 2007. I never recovered my job the next years that followed. In 2010 I was accommodated by Crafts Artisans in Majengo market where I got a small space in one of the workshops. I would like to expose our work to Tourists, who are the final consumers of our products. Here, you can buy directly from the producers and tour the more than 100 small workshops belonging to individual artisans, where artisan's skills are displayed. I will also bring you closer to other entrepreneurs in Gikomba market to see our market settings and business transactions, to enhance a cross cultural understanding.

Ce qui est inclus

À boire
I will provide mineral water, which will be available as we walk around.
