Let's make a soy source cruet by Edo-Glass!

This glass machining experience comes in two parts; a comprehensive tour of the factory followed by a hands on experience of making your own cut glass soy sauce cruet. At the end of the experience, you will be able to take home your very own cut glass soy sauce cruet!
During the factory tour, you will learn all about the history of glass machining and about the tools and machineries used in the craft.
Moving on to the hands on experience, you will polish the neck of the cut glass soy sauce cruet with a diamond headed drill, widening the opening to fit a stopper. This spill-free soy sauce cruet is a traditional piece of Japanese glasswork and its functional and elgant design make it an ideal souvenir or gift.
The experience will conclude with the gift-wrapping of your very own cut glass soy sauce cruet.

Each workshop can accommodate up to 5 people, and children over 4 years of age are also welcome in this safe, family-friendly experience.

The total duration of the experience is 1 hour.

All materials shall be provided.

In a small and old glass machining factory animated by the sound of wooden gears grinding Edo glassware, Takayuki SHIINA will guide you through the basics of glass-processing. Koto City is well known for its Edo glassware, such as the Edo-Kiriko cut glass. The Shina Glass factory was founded in 1950 by Takayuki’s grandfather, and the factory has since been passed on to Takayuki’s father and younger brother. Takayuki himself graduated from university and was employed at a large corporation before founding GLASS LAB in 2014, propozing customized glass in partnership with Shina Glass.

This was a charming and insightful experience! Takayuki gave a primer on glass processing and Edo kiriko (noting they don’t produce the glass themselves) and his family’s business history, now in its third generation of ownership. It was amazing to know that the workshop still operates on a single motor system set up by his grandfather! There are examples of their work on display in the workshop, including some beautiful kaleidoscopic-designed glasses innovated by Takayuki’s family. The hands-on experience polishing the cruet was short but fun, and I love the souvenir. Takayuki was very kind, knowledgeable and passionate about the business and I appreciated his warmth and chats (his English is good too)! Would highly recommend this experience :)

An unique experience where you learn about the glass finishing process that only Takayuki's factory provides. The soy sauce container that we made was cooler than I had originally expected, with small but thoughtful finishing touches.

Fantastic experience! Takayuki was warm and inviting and showed us how his family make glass. It was a very unique experience and would recommend this to anyone who wants to have a hands on experience and take home gift.

This was one of our favourite experiences during our trip to Japan. If you’re looking for a little break from the bustle of Tokyo and an authentic experience, book in with Takayuki. It was absolutely charming.
