Au programme

You will spend the first part of your day in close contact with the quarry men of Carrara, visiting a marble quarry, watching the excavation processes of the rough blocks and learning how the experts transform a rock into a beautiful artwork or piece of furniture. Lunch will be served in a small restaurant overlooking the quarry where you'll taste all the local products such as the famous Lardo di Colonnata (a special type of salumi aged in a marble basin). In the afternoon we will drive down to Carrara, the marble capital of the World, to visit its centre and see all the monuments and historic buildings where marble found its best applications. Later in the evening we'll go to the neighboring city of Massa and hike our way inside the famous Castello Malaspina, a XII century castle overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, to enjoy an aperitif while we wait for the sunset.

I have a bachelor degree in Geology from the University of Pisa and I've been working in or around marble quarries for the past 12 years analyzing, manufacturing and selling natural stone products. Marble has been part of the Italian DNA from centuries, all the way back to the Romans who use it to build the foundations of their Empire and to create some of the most beautiful sculptures and monuments. There are a lot of fascinating facts and knowledge to be learn by exploring a marble quarry, understanding the everyday hard work of the "cavatori" (quarry men) that for generations have risked their lives to extract this precious material from the mountains around Carrara.

Le lieu

We'll be inside a marble quarry in the north of Tuscany in the morning and, after having lunch at a traditional "osteria", tasting local products, we'll be visiting the historic centre of Carrara, the World capital of marble. We will wrap up the day inside a XII century castle nestled among the mountains, sipping an aperitif while watching the sun set into the Mediterranean Sea

We had a very nice day with Nicola and he showed us a lot of the region. It was thoughtfully put together. He also answered all our questions and we had quite a lot. We can totally recommend this tour!

Nicola picked us up at the Carrara/Avenza station. Driving with him felt comfortable and safe. He did tell us about the Carrara marble and the area, while he drove between the different sites we visited. He bought us a ticket to the Tour inside the quarry. Inside the quarry he didn’t join us. He was able to answer questions about specifics, which even the quarry tour people didn’t know the answers to. We visited Colonnata where we did try the Lardo typical for the area with a good view of the mountains. The Tour went on to the city centers of Carrara and Massa, here he did tell about the development of the cities, which he experienced himself, being local to the area. We finished the evening with a visit to the Castello Malaspina and an aperitif on the castle having a great view. We felt like we’ve seen a lot during the day, not only at the stops but also when we drove with Nicola in the car. He was well spoken and his English was really good. Also he asked for allergies when he ordered food in the restaurants we visited and made sure we did have enough water as it was quite a warm day. We did enjoy the tour a lot, as we wouldn’t have seen all those spots on our own. Considering that he didn’t only pay for the tickets to the quarry and the Castello, but also the lunch and the aperitif, the price of the tour did seem surprisingly low.
