Au programme

Please get in touch for more dates if what is available doesn't work for you.
On arrival, you will be provided with a map and a magnetic compass, yours to use for the duration of the Experience.
The aim of the Experience is to share with you the basics of navigating with a map and compass. To do this, you will need to get to grips with a range of simple techniques that are easy to learn, but they do need practice.
There is an introduction to maps, map scales and suitable maps for your walking adventures.
The compass and its features will be described.
Pacing is a great skill and a necessary tool for you to master; essentially you use your paces to measure 100-metres as you walk across the ground.
You will understand and identify map symbols and their application when navigating.
You will get to grips with and work out a grid reference from the map.
You will find out how to calculate a bearing using the compass and to follow it to reach a defined point on the map.
You will understand how to measure distance on a map using the compass.
You will be given the techniques needed to set the map up and how to navigate with it.
You will take it in turns with others joining the Experience, to lead us all to a defined point, using all of the above techniques.
I will introduce the hand-held GPS unit and other digital systems.
I am happy to take questions throughout the Experience.
Other things to note
The Experience is outdoors, so you will need to wear warm and waterproof clothes and preferably walking boots or walking shoes. Please check the weather forecast. Some previous knowledge is useful, but the experience is designed for beginners. There are uphill/downhill sections and off-road walking

I founded Footsteps in Northumberland in 2011. Footsteps is all about offering guided walks, tours and skills training, all three are the mainstay of my business. I hold a national qualification, the Hill and Moorland Leader Award, which I gained through Mountain Training (England), one of the UK's national governing bodies. My day to day life takes me out and about in the wilder parts of Northumberland and the basic tools of my craft are the map and the compass, without which, I would be to put it simply, lost! This means that I have to be competent in their use and over the years I have spent working in the outdoors, I have become an expert in the use of the map and the compass. I get a lot of satisfaction introducing clients to these basic navigation tools and setting them off on their own walking adventures that lie ahead of them.

Le lieu

The Experience takes place in and around the gentle hills close to the village of Ingram in Northumberland National Park. The valley is an ideal place to deliver the Experience with its uncomplicated landscape and lots of navigation features to discover, giving you the opportunity to develop your map reading abilities. There is a café too, it's a great place to finish and reflect on your new found map and compass skills.

This was a great way to explore a truly beautiful part of the country. Patrick has a really detailed knowledge of the area, and years of experience in the skill of navigating. Not only that, but he is a patient and adept teacher, who kept our kids engaged for several hours!

We had a great day learning map skills. My son (12), daughter (10), husband and I all learnt a lot and had a brilliant day. As an extra, the location for learning map skills was stunningly beautiful. Patrick was a great teacher and really good company for the day.

Patrick is patient and sensible, so you learn as much as you want about orientation and maps. This is a really useful topic if you're interested in hiking. For me, as a beginner in those matter, was a wonderful experience.

It’s the best outdoor experience I have had in England so far. Apart from learning how to navigate the countryside by properly using ordinance maps and a compass, the walk itself along Ingram valley was breathtaking (literally and emotionally). Once we reached the top of the mountain, the views were stunning. Patrick has excellent knowledge of the area and provided very interesting added information on historical landmarks from Iron Age settlements that would have otherwise passed unnoticed to the untrained eye. Patrick was very patient and took us from the very basics until we felt confident using a map and walking around. I couldn’t possible praise this experience enough. If you want to learn how to use a map and a compass and love the countryside, this experience is worth every penny, every heartbeat and every minute.

What a fabulous day. I have had navigation skills training before but this is the first time it really made sense to me and was tailored to my experience. Patrick was really welcoming and conveyed his knowledge in a way that I could understand. The activities he set gave me plenty of opportunity to practise, and all in the most fabulous location. I finished the day with usable skills and increased confidence.
