Capture Kyoto's beauty with a professional artist

Does your camera remember your trips better than you do? Slow down and go analogue with travel sketchbooking. We'll spend a relaxing afternoon learning how to capture Kyoto's charm and beauty with a sketchbook and compact watercolor kit.

Not only will I show you how to paint what we see during the experience, I'll give you tips, tricks, and ideas for continuing to use your new compact watercolor sketching kit for the rest of your stay in Japan, and for your next adventures as well!

We'll get our start in Kyoto's sake brewing district, a beautiful historical area less frequented by tourists. Laced with old canals that used to be the arteries of commerce in days gone by, it's the perfect setting to try out your new watercolor kit and learn some basics while sketching the iconic Gekkeikan Sake Brewery.

Next, we'll stroll past several sake breweries and through a retro shopping arcade, where we'll catch a train to the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine. The vermilion gates and sacred forest of this shrine are perfect inspiration. We'll find some quieter areas where we can create paintings together. We'll end our day partway up the trail where you can choose to stay and explore on your own, or catch a train to your next destination.

In the case of rain, a modified itinerary will be provided: sketching temple/shrine scenery from covered areas with pens/pencils and limited watercolor.

I'm an artist with a passion for travel! I've traveled the world with my paints and sketchbook but now call Kyoto home. I have over a decade of teaching experience, specializing in helping beginners learn to paint.

My goal is to help you see the beauty of Kyoto with an artist's eye and capture it using your own unique style, and also give you the tools to create travel sketchbooks of your own anywhere you go.

Le lieu

We'll get our start in the southern Fushimi area. Peppered with sake breweries and laced with old canals that used to be the arteries of commerce in days gone by, it's the perfect setting to try out your new watercolor kit and learn some basics.

After that, we'll stroll through a retro shopping arcade and hop a train to the nearby Fushimi Inari shrine, famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that wind up a forested mountain slope.

This was a great experience. Rachel was really thoughtful and accommodating, adjusting the lesson to suit what I wanted to learn, adapting to my painting speed and answering all of my questions. By the end, I had three finished paintings and Rachel had ensured I was set up with the supplies and knowledge necessary to continue on my own. As well as being a great art instructor, Rachel was also a great tour guide pointing out all of the interesting sights on our route. Highly recommended!

This truly was a fantastic experience and I so appreciated Rachel's organization and creativity on the locations we went to sketch and paint. The watercolor palette you receive and keep she has personally created and love how easy it is to use while on location! As well she gives you the brush and watercolor paper book. Rachel is such a great instructor and myself having a little knowledge , I see that she can work with everyone from novice to expert and give pearls of wisdom and insight with her charm and humor . I like the easy walking and thought put into the several locations and she even packs you a mini cute it's all in the details!

As a non-artist this was an excellent experience. Not only did i learn I could actually draw, Rachel was very knowledgable about the areas she took us to which gave an added perspective to our painting. On top of this the thoughtfulness of her program (snacks included) was extra special. A fun experience even if you have never painted before!

Whether you’ve got zero or some experience in water color/sketching, Rachel is able to tailor to individual goals and level and really encourage personal style. There was only one other student on my day, and classes are usually kept to a maximum of only five. This class has helped me build a foundation in watercolor techniques which will really enhance my travel sketching! I went on to practice painting in the following days around Kyoto (everywhere in Kyoto is picture-perfect). Painting aside, the course of the class was also peppered with history and insights into the places we visited. Thank you Rachel!

Rachel was very attentive to me in ensuring I got a lot of what I'm looking for while having lots of fun. Her enthusiasm was contagious, it might have made watercoloring as a hobby I'd spend a good time on!
