Au programme

I take groups of up to 10 people on the Tuesday evening Shepherding Walks. I'll meeting you in the car park in Mortehoe. We'll walk a short way to the sheep pens, where I'll show you something of the training of a young sheepdog and talk about what it takes to farm in this challenging environment. Then we'll walk for a couple of miles at a leisurely pace around the Morte Point peninsular, on some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the South West of England. The Point is owned by the National Trust, and as the tenant farmer, I graze my sheep across the 200 acres amongst the rocks and cleaves, the bracken and heather and to the cliff edge, I couldn't do it without my amazing team of sheepdogs. This year 'Sweep' is my top dog, and on my Shepherding walks you'll see him working far into the distance controlled by my whistle, balanced by his own skills and instinct. A really top sheepdog makes decisions of its own, and often knows far more than I do about working the sheep, and will spot problems unseen by the shepherd.
If the weather permits and the tide is right, we'll see the local seals on the way home. On summers evenings they bask on the rocks, with a haunting call that echos around on still summers evening, We usually take a little over 2 hours for the walk. I hope that it will be an experience that will live long in the memory

I've been a sheep farmer and sheepdog trainer for the past 35 years, I keep 500 breeding sheep that graze at my home farm and on the coastal ground that I rent for the National Trust.
Sheepdogs are my passion, I compete in sheepdog trials over the summer months and have represented England in International Sheepdog Trials, and over the past 20 years we diversified our farming, hosting weekly Sheepdog and Falconry Displays at the farm, as well as writing books and creating the 'Mist Sheepdog tales' TV series for Channel Five
I love taking people out on these Shepherding Experience walks, talking about shepherding life in this beautiful corner of north Devon, and showing them the work of my dogs. It is here in their natural environment that you can really see just how amazing these dogs really are.

Le lieu

We'll be walking through the pretty ancient village of Mortehoe, past it's 14th century St Mary's church, and onto the 200 acre Morte Point Peninsular. The walking is fairly easy but there are a couple of areas of steep path, so you'll need t be reasonably active, and wear some outdoor footwear

I thought it would be unique, and it was! A fascinating evening walk in a truly beautiful spot. David was engaging and the Dogs were the stars... naturally. Well worth it!

I can’t recommend this experience enough! David ensured we were well prepared and gave us a fascinating insight into sheep dogs and shepherding, in a stunning setting. Our kids said it was the best part of their stay in North Devon. To watch the two dogs herding sheep. Elia is on the Morte Hoe peninsular brought the landscape to life. Brilliant.

Loved this unique experience, watching David's skill commanding Sweep and Merk to herd the sheep whilst enjoying magnificent views and then walking along the coast to find the seals was something we will not forget. Highly recommended - but not for children too young to spend 2+ hours walking as they can hold up the rest of the group.
