Au programme

We will be paddling around Jimbo's lagoon in Virginia Key. From November to March this lagoon becomes a home to several Manatee herds. We will remain a respectable distance and enjoy viewing these wild gentle giants from our Kayaks and Paddleboards. We will then visit several spots around the lagoon and discuss the history and ecologic significance of it.

Depending on the conditions after the paddle around the lagoon, we will then head on over to the beach to relax and take some pictures & catch a glimpse of Fisher Island!

For the past six years I have been kayaking all around Florida! Exploring waterways all down the east coast and in my own backyard of Miami, FL! Since 2016 I have been a regular tour guide at the Virginia Key Outdoor Center, a family owned and operated rental concession on Biscayne Bay. In 2018 I became ACA Level 2 certified. I have a passion for the outdoors and connecting individuals to it through the means kayaking and paddleboarding! I have also taken several courses at the local University in regards to Marine Biology and the South Florida Ecology!

Awesome experience!! Definitely worth the price of the trip. Our tour guides were excellent and informative, and there was plenty of group time and individual time to do what you wanted. We also stopped by the beach and looked at other animals. The only big big issue was figuring out how to get home (since we rideshared to the location), there was no wifi and it was incredibly difficult trying to find a ride to get back.

This outing was amazing! The weather couldn’t have been better. We were thinking we were just going to see 1 or 2 manatees a couple of times but we saw 4-5 consistently during our time in their area. We also saw puffer fish and native birds. The guides were very knowledgeable and excited to be out on the water with the guests. Beginners in kayaking don’t need to be weary, the water is incredibly calm. Overall this experience was well worth the money and I would highly recommend it!

This was a fantastic experience. Gino and Sergio were knowledgeable and passionate about the manatees and told us a lot about the area and the wildlife. To see manatees up close and personal in the wild was really super.

This was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed it. I didn’t expect to see so much bird, iguana and manatees! The beach was lovely. The hosts were super nice and thoughtful. They gave us plenty of free time to explore on our own.

This was a fun and very unique kayak experience. It was easy to arrive by rideshare and we were able to keep our backpacks at the VKOC store before taking off on the kayaks. We also took our own phones inside a dry bag to take pictures (since the water was very calm). The guides were friendly and knowledgeable, taking pictures for you while on the lagoon. Ours was a big group so it was difficult to hear what the guides were saying at times. The water was very calm and easy to kayak in, and the mangrove scenery was very serene! At the beginning of the tour, we spent about ~30mins in the manatee area. We were lucky to spot some manatees up close (but please keep in mind that there is a big luck factor involved if a manatee would creep out of the water right next to your kayak!). We also saw many manatees creeping up a bit further away, but its a whole different thing to see these gentle giants up close! After the first 30mins, we explored the lagoon on our kayaks and got off our kayaks to explore the nearby coastline. At the end of the tour, the guides gave us another ~30mins to kayak on our own and spot the manatees (but we were not so lucky to spot the manatee this time around…maybe they went to sleep since it was close to 4-5pm). Pro tip: If you are just interested to see the manatees but don’t have a lot of time, you can probably just rent the kayak independently and explore the area (fewer kayaks would also make it more likely to see the manatees since any noise can easily scare them away). The manatee area is just right there where you take off on your kayak. The lagoon is also not very large and quite easy to explore independently. On an all, this is a great experience if you want a relaxing afternoon on the lagoon with the manatees!

This was a fun and very unique experience. The guides were knowledgeable and answered questions about the area and manatees throughout. Plenty of opportunities to see manatees, except when other people and boats would come in and block up the area. It was a holiday weekend so probably the reason for so many people.
