Experience the Art and History of old industrial Brooklyn

Local insider artist and Gowanus Dredger Rich Garr collages together an art-centric walking tour of the streets around Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal. Each tour is unique and mines the community's deep creative base to explore the past, present and future of the changing neighborhood.

Art studio or gallery visits may spice up the walk and assist in understanding this rapidly changing corner of NYC. Whether featured art is legal or not, painted or printed, tame or wild - it all has a place in this unique multi-sensory experience.

Our walk meets at Brooklyn Habit coffee, 405 Smith St. and ends 1.5 hours later at the boathouse or near an appropriate local watering hole where further discussion (& drinks) are encouraged. During the summer, canoeing the Gowanus Canal is available for free after the tour and profits support programming. www.gowanuscanal.org

Rich is an insider with the stories behind the walls featuring works of Swoon, Mast, Wolf Tits and other renowned street artists of our Gowanus waterfront neighborhood. He has intimate knowledge of hidden alternative art spaces and the work of anonymous "green guerillas" and graffiti artists.

Rich Garr holds a NYC Tour Guide license tour guide and is CPR / First Aid certified. He is a Gowanus artist who studied art & history and worked at the Cleveland Museum teaching art to youth. Upon returning to NYC he worked at the Brooklyn Museum helping plan interdisciplinary programming. Freelancing followed, as did an art studio in Gowanus Brooklyn.

Le lieu

The Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn is a Superfund site & cleanup of this industrial waterway is underway. While pollution lingers, there are new issues of development, zoning & gentrification.

The neighborhood is changing rapidly, and our tour features real-time information & insight. We'll walk the uplands to visit a custom mix of historic businesses, hip new bars & cafes, view unique art & discover recreational spaces from ax throwing to canoeing.

Really fun/unique experience learning about the lesser-known street-art scene in Gowanus. Rich obviously is passionate and knows a lot about the subject, and told stories about meeting some of the artists who have been on the scene for years. I'd definitely recommend the tour to anyone who wants to know more about the neighborhood.

Rich is very knowledgeable about graffiti, he has a personal passion about this topic, lots of connections with many of the artists whose works we saw, and he is an artist himself. He carries additional material on the artists and the topics. I live in the area and was still able to gleam a few things that I had missed. Rich was always open to questions and suggestions. We walked about a mile, though I personally would have loved to cover a bit more ground.

This tour was just amazing. It really helped me to see how vibrant Gowanus is. The knowledge Rich has on local history and street art is great but what really made this experience something special was his closeness to local artists that have been living and working in Gowanus for quite a while. They are all active members of their community so you leave with the feeling that despite the nonstop nature of change there is a glimpse of hope if people come together and care for eachother.

I have been to NYC many times but did not know this area at all. Tim is an artist himself and he led a fascinating trip around the Gowanus area. Highly recommend!
