Do you want to meet local people and experience the traditional craftsmanship and design of Kyoto? Do you want to explore hidden places, not so crowded with tourists? Do you want information about real life in Kyoto?

I created this guided exploration for you.

I invite you to walk with me in downtown Kyoto, where I'll show you hidden gems and unique places related to traditional craftsmanship and local lifestyle. You will meet the artisans and shop owners, and enjoy many interesting stories and information about the city and how people are living in Kyoto. I will guide you to several places and shops during the two-and-a-half-hour walk.

You may enter a secret garden, meet the 18th-generation artisan of a famous family, visit the people who created the golden cover of the Kinkakuji (Golden temple), hear legends and stories about the interesting history of downtown and the traditional arts. Meanwhile, we will also try some tasty traditional Kyoto style sweets.

This is not a classic historical walk; I will introduce you to Kyoto's people for discussion, and to share our experience about real life in Kyoto. We are going to small, local places.

I have lived in this area of Kyoto for four years, and I like every corner of it. I am studying sado (tea ceremony) and writing my PhD in cultural tourism in Kyoto. I like hidden gems, therefore I have explored many non-touristic places. I found that so many talented craftsmen and designers live in this area, and I'd like to share their story and work with you. Many times I chat with them; they are very open and friendly, but most of them can't speak English. I speak Japanese, so let me help you explore their interesting work and backgrounds.

Le lieu

We will go to five to seven places related to design and traditional arts and crafts. At every place we will have discussions with the artisan or people living there. For example, we'll meet a painter family in a traditional machiya (townhouse) where they will explain their technique; we'll visit a knife shop, where they once made katana swords; we'll learn about Japanese seals; and visit a 18th-generation merchant family.

Sazbo was a fantastic host and if you want to see a side of Kyoto you'd never get access to on your own, this is the experience for you. I met amazing craftspeople and saw hidden parts of the city that are really close by but you'd never know they were there without Szabo to guide you.

Great tour if you want to visit some minor stores you probably wouldn’t find by yourself. Especially nice to sit down and talk to some artisans.

This was a really lovely tour. We enjoyed walking to all the different speciality artisan stores and learning about the history of their owners and products. Really great!
