Hanging lanterns have been traditionally made for centuries, to be launched for play or as part of festivities. Lanterns are a traditional handicraft of Northern Thailand and it is during the Loy Krathong festival that the most beautiful and special ones are displayed. Chiang Mai people compare the lantern’s light to the light of wisdom which sheds light onto the path in darkness. So they offer these lanterns to Buddhist monks in order to worship the Buddha. They believe that offering lanterns is auspicious and brings merit, and they will be born with the greater light of wisdom in their next incarnation.

This exhibition has only one place and one time of year starting from 1 October to 16 November,

In Chiang Mai, if you are visiting our beautiful city first time, please don't miss this beautiful lanterns exhibition.

The greatest discovery is self-discovery. That's where all the inspiration started. I'm one of those people who have a relatively low level of expression skills.
So I learned to allow myself to experience things around me without a frame of mind. It is a time for us to convey our imaginations or feelings through works of art. Through what we can touch, it is very calm and enjoyable. Therefore, I would like to share and share experiences by using the community where I was born to participate to create income for the people in the community, and in other words, to continue to inherit and preserve the tradition of making lanterns and our beautiful lanterns exhibition.

I absolutely LOVED this experience! We met at a main village temple, which is nice to visit for a few minutes if you arrive a bit earlier. Jaturong, aka Boss, picked me up from there and we went to the house of the Lantern Master, who has been making lanterns for 60 years. There, I got to make my own lantern. The Master is a great teacher and super fun. Boss was also awesome at giving information and answering all my many questions. After making my lantern, we went for dinner. I got to try some of Chiang Mai's unique dishes and I was in love with the flavours. In the evening, we went to visit the temple where the lantern festival takes place. Boss explained to me a lot about Thai Buddhism and believes. This was really great. Having been in Thailand for a while, I did visit many temples, but it is very special to visit with someone who can explain all the meanings and traditions. I also got to hang my lantern, which was very special. I greatly recommend this tour! I was by myself and Boss made me feel super at easy. It was like being with a good friend all day. If you visit Chiang Mai and would like to have a unique experience, this is definitely the one!

Making these Lanna lanterns under the guidance of a master was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There's no better way to learn about a culture than from the locals, especially those who are so generous in what they wish to share. We really felt connected to the history of the lanterns and were lucky to participate in this beautiful tradition. Visiting Lampoon following the lantern-making, also connected us to the vibrant history of the lanterns and gave us insight into local customs and experiences. Our hosts were so kind, knowledgeable, and excited to share their culture with us. We had an amazing time and you should not pass up on this experience if it is available.
