Au programme

On this Kyoto tour, you'll discover some of the magic of the city through cultural explorations and local experiences. First we'll head to one of the city’s must-see sights, the Tofukuji Temple. Originally built in the 13th century, and famous for its traditional, yet modern, Zen garden, this is a great place to escape to a relaxed atmosphere in the city.

Next we walk through a nice local residential neighbourhood to the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Home to a seemingly endless stretch of iconic red torii gates spread across a thickly wooded mountain, this shrine is a world unto itself. Walk through snaking corridors of red gates, made famous in the film Memoirs of Geisha, stopping to admire the shrines and many fox statues. Major photo opportunity alert!

As the sun begins to set on the Toriis, we leave behind the foxes and head to Gion, famously known as Kyoto’s Geisha district. This area was the model for Memoirs of Geisha, and it comes alive with people and lights in the evening. Stroll past the 17th-century traditional restaurants and teahouses, many of which are still exclusive establishments for Geisha entertainment.

Good tour, not especially deep, but social and fun. We took two trains, which saved a lot of walking, and the tour covered the costs of those and of entrance to two temples. It was a fantastic deal for the money. And I learned the basics of what we saw. This is not an in-depth of "secrets of >>>" tour, but we had a good time, and there's so much to see and learn in Kyoto that a surface level tour has its place. I really enjoyed myself.

The experience was a nice one. The host we got was an enthusiastic gentleman. Would definitely recommend them. Only suggestion is to perhaps have more engaging and interesting story telling beyond the obvious. Also try and gauge the audience and tailor make the experience. For eg. we were a family of 3 only for that afternoon and my son who is 13 years did not find it the tour very engaging for him. That said, our host was very affable and spoke perfect English, which in itself is a huge advantage.

It was nice to talk to get a chance to know the two host, and the guest on the tour. Everyone had lots of personal stories! I really liked how the host would not only talk to the entire group but they also spent time individually with each participant!!!

It’s been a great tour at Kyoto. Our guide made sure to not lose us within crowded areas and he even helped us to get back to the main station. I am very grateful that he helped me to find my bus at Kyoto station. Let’s hope that in the future the Japanese government will add more English signs and information for tourists at public places. It’s very easy to get lost at big stations, which seem more like shopping malls than a place for public transport. However thumps up for this tour!
