Au programme

We will meet in Amman and drive north approximately 120 km to Um Qays. We will stop on the way for a local breakfast and coffee/tea.

We will start the experience at the Um Qays Heritage and Archaeological site. Here, we will learn about the Roman and Greek ruins and amphitheater, as well the mosaic remains and sculptures in the museum. The site allows us to witness several different civilizations who have lived in the area.
Moving on to a view overlooking Tiberias Lake, showing the Golan Heights, we will observe the political divisions of the region with our own eyes.
Arriving at Al-Mukhaybeh village, we will meet with locals to learn about their daily life, culture, and identity. We will be welcomed by the head of the village for tea.
A pick-up truck will move us to a trail along the Arayes (or “of the brides”) pond, a beautiful sight with great stories. We will learn about its name and significance in relation to the agricultural projects, the village’s famous hot springs and its current reality, while having lunch and discussing the exceptional handicrafts in the village and their significance across generations.

**Important Note: the cost of the experience does not include transportation from and back to Amman. The cost of transportation depends on the size of the group. 1-3 people will be 50JD.**

My name is Anas Amarneh and I am the founder of Through Local Eyes, a start-up aiming to promote non-touristic destinations with a unique story to help local communities benefit from tourism in Jordan, and have their voices heard, while connecting touristic landmarks.
I am a Tourism Management university student. I have lived and worked in various rural areas in Jordan, where I contributed in developing alternative programs and activities.
My goal is to develop the new alternative Jordanian tourism map, which aims to be fair, sustainable and inclusive. I have great interest in politics, heritage, and identity, and have strong faith in the significance of cultural exchange. The programs I offer focus on fair, ethical, and sustainable experiences.

Le lieu

Al-Mukhaibeh Al Fawqa Village is located in the District of Irbid in the north of Jordan.
Located along the Golan Heights, it is a buffer zone. Intimidating for most, it is actually an extremely safe area as it’s protected for border reasons. This program was created to debunk this myth and help the village restore its touristic potential.
This program has been organized for the specific needs of the village.

This was the best thing I did in Jordan. Anas is highly intelligent, engaging, kind, and has deep love for the people connected to this experience. He has created something that directly benefits the community and allows you to see the reality of daily life for people beyond the shiny facade of the tourism industry. He takes care of everyone, both visitors and hosts, and kindly assists with translating meaningful conversation. He provided so much information and shared so many stories. I particularly recommend this for Westerners/Americans because our governments have played such a large and harmful role in the political situation in Northwest Jordan, and it's important that we take time to really understand how that affects people day to day.

A big fat 'waw' is in place. This guy knows his history, knows his people and knows the real stories that should be told. A limited 500-characters-review won't do this experience any justice. It's a total recommendation: you get to see places you wouldn't be able to find yourself, you learn things that no other guide could tell you and you get an insight in a daily life you couldn't imagine. Anas is an eloquent and passionate host, very considerate about people and environment, and up to discuss anything, with great knowledge. If you're looking for that little bit more, book one of his tours!

The most amazing social experience I’ve ever attended. There are no words to describe it. You have to live it. It’s safe, fascinating, peaceful, welcoming. What an emotional journey!

Being taken on an adventure through northern Jordan by Anas was truly a unique experience. Anas is very easy to talk with on all subjects and he is very knowledgeable. My two sons also enjoyed his company very much and we got to see an authentic part of Jordan, which we would never have been able to see without Anas. I would highly recommend to spend a day with Anas getting to know more about his culture, the country and his passion for off the beaten track tourism supporting locals. Anas is an open person and easy and fun to get along with. Visit the real Jordan with Anas!

This experience is probably the best in all of Jordan. For starters Anas is not only an incredible host but an amazing person. He was very flexible and did everything he could to make my experience the best it could be. He was also responsive and quick to answer any questions I might have. With all of that said Annas clearly loves this village and the people who live there. To him this experience is not a job but an opportunity to share with the world a place and people which have brought him so much joy. It holds a special place in his heart and after your experience it will hold a special place in yours to. This trip has both awe inspiring natural sites, in the form of the beautiful green Golan Heights and the flowing Yamouk River, and amazing people. Emphasis on the people as this trip is much more so about getting to know the locals and their stories, which they are eager to share. You will hear about local legends and what life is like in this small village. You will experience first hand that old world hospitality which so many of us in the west have never experienced. This experience is much more than just a fun day in the mountains but an incredible learning and bonding (if you so wish) opportunity. As you will get to know both the culture and the people. ***My fondest memory was having a cookout at one of the locals home/farm. We made the food ourselves and it was delicious. I even tried the milk of a goat who had just given birth in the same day which gives the milk a unique and sweet flavor. The highlight though was not food but the conversation. My favorite of which being talking with a shepherd who had many questions for me and I for him. We were able to share stories about our own lives and found that even though we came from very different places that we all still have much in common. I cannot recommend this experience enough and if you are on the fence contact Anas he will be happy to help.
