Au programme

There is so little time or opportunity nowadays to experience the countryside and coast at night, away from the blinding glare of street lights and vehicles.

My Night Hike on the Jurassic Coast takes you to a section of coastline that is completely free of all light pollution and rich in wildlife.

We will follow well maintained tracks and paths from the village of Worth Matravers in Purbeck along the ancient Priests Way and down a winding valley to the wave-washed rocks at Seacombe Cove.

From here we walk along a fenced clifftop path back to the Square and Compass pub in Worth Matravers and on the way I tell ghostly tales of the shipwrecked sailors and smugglers that haunt the surrounding cliffs and valleys

Along the way there is a possibility of seeing a variety of nocturnal wildlife such as deer, badgers, bats and owls.

If we are lucky the sky will be clear of clouds and I can tell stories of how the constellations were named and give mind-blowing astronomical facts and figures.

At the end The Square and Compass provides a warm and welcoming drink, pastie and usually a roaring log fire.

Le lieu

I have lived near Worth Matravers for the past 23 years and know and love every path, cove, cliff and copse. My tour takes you to places that many would not discover on their own even in daylight, let alone at night. It is a truly exciting and inspiring experience that everyone has to try.

We had a great night hike on the stunning Jurassic Coast with Barry, our guide, from the beautiful Dorset village of Worth Matravers. Barry is a local with extensive knowledge and expertise, in many fields, which enhances the experience. He was engaging, well-equipped and hospitable and concerned for our comfort and safety, especially as darkness fell. It was a magical experience. We would love to walk with him again and would definitely recommend .

Can't recommend this experience highly enough. If you want to stroll through the wonderful Purbeck countryside, partially by the sea and hear tales of local smugglers, learn about characters past and their culture whilst treading ancient pathways then take this walk. Barry is very knowledgeable on many subjects. We would often stop as we walked and learned fascinating facts about many things such as, local mining in the past , for instance, local stone was used to face Buckingham Palace ! We saw glow worms, heard bats, saw star constellations and planets and so much more. If you want to get away from the telly box and do something a bit different then this is for you. 3 hours of entertainment and learning, very enjoyable.

So interesting and beautiful. A great time of day to take a walk around a lovely section of the coast. Trainers are adequate, but walking boots would also be appropriate. Really worth doing, and if you get a clear night the sky will be spectacular. We even caught a shooting star 🤩

Firstly, Barry is extremely friendly and greeted us with a very warm welcome. Walking through his lovely home village, it was incredible to hear the stories and history of the village, this was such a lovely surprise as we thought the walk would predominantly (possibly only!) be talking about geology. Barry’s expert and world-class knowledge of the area and geology really framed the breathtaking views and backdrops that we were greeted with. Our favourite parts were stories of shipwrecks and smugglers all whilst taking the same footsteps as those in the stories. Barry was also genuinely interested in getting to know us as people, which added a great connection for the three hours. Thanks again Barry and we hope to see you soon.
