Au programme

It's the goats or "girls" as I call them that welcome you to the 59er's trail hike. They walk with you, around you and among you.

We begin our tour at the STAGE STOP homestead 20 minutes from Boulder for our hike through history. Starting with a talk about the history of the area we will then walk through the pioneer homestead in Cloud City mining district. Then we set off on the miners’ trail up Arkansas Mountain, named for the Acansa Indians.

Retracing the trail of the '59ers, we'll see old mine portals, the Cloud City school house, Cornish stone walls built to shore up hillsides, mine portals and donkey-cart chutes, blacksmith forge, and more. I'll point out blow holes where miners tested for gold and the triple pine tree trunks growing over old mining tunnels. The land reveals many secrets of our past when you know how and where to look.

Along the way there will be time for photos and a trail stops for breathing and storytelling. Our hike ends at the STAGE STOP, where we began. The STAGE STOP was named for the blacksmith services offered to the mining community right here on our property, the Ol' Crane Ranch.

A review, "The hike with Valerie and her goats was the highlight of our trip. We went to Boulder, when their location and her stories offered everything to experience the real beauty and history of Colorado."

The Stage Stops HERE! I've roamed Boulder County and beyond for over 50 years and now with GOATS! If generations count, both Jesse and my great grandparents traveled by wagon train to Colorado! I've written about old mining sites and brothels and located several while combing the miners' trails.
It's the goats that make the hike unique and fun. Mimi, Polka, Coco and Polly walk, run, EAT, and play around us. They are so accustom to being with two-leggeds (people) that they nudge you for pets and pictures. We've owned goats since 2015. I've mid-wifed, doctored, milked, groomed (hooves included) and bred goats until we are now a te

Le lieu

We hike the old Arkansas Mountain mining trail 20 minutes west of Boulder. Starting at an 1860's Crane ranch, a little history, then we hit the trail with goats. Stops along the way reveal the lives of the '59ers; mines, school, tunnels and more. This is an exceptional opportunity to walk western history on sites unknown to the general public. Retracing their steps & telling their stories awakens a sense of being there.

I HIGHLY recommend this unique experience. Valerie was very informed about the history of the area, including interesting tidbits and stories. Our teenagers said it was a "top ten" experience and they loved it. Hiking along with the goats brought it to a whole new level! Thanks for an amazing day!

This was an awesome experience. Valerie is very knowledgable and friendly, with an awesome sense of humor. She was able to teach us something about a culture we knew very little about and show us historical landmarks that we would not have been able to identify on our own. The hike felt like an adventure but wasn't too physically strenuous. And the goats were great company!! Logistically, the hike began and ended exactly on time, and their directions to their home were perfect. Valerie even let us borrow clothes as she was concerned that we might be chilly! Such a highlight of our trip and we would all highly recommend.

This was such a unique and amazing hiking experience. The goats were all so sweet and Valerie was so welcoming and knowledgeable! We started the hike with a little history lesson about the area we were going to be hiking. Super nice! Her house is so eccentric and spectacular! Valerie made sure to take time with each of us throughout the hike to get to know us. Many stories were shared and memories made. Best $ I’ve ever spent on a hiking experience!
