Gay Side of History at City's Top Sites

(Para español, contáctame)

In this part, Part One of many, in the Gay Side of History Experiences, you will learn about LGBT+ traditions from the time of the Aztecs through the 21st century as we stroll by the city’s main monuments, along 700 years.

We will talk about the origins of Mexico as it became the Aztec Empire and of how “unspeakable sins” were punished, as we see the military quarters at the Aztec’s Main Temple.

You will learn about being a feminist lesbian in the 17th century as we visit the old economic hub of the Spanish Empire while famous buildings line the full way.

Homosexuality in the early 20th century is seen by Frida Kahlo's high school & that of "Los Contemporáneos," a group of gay scholars.

We will see the Spanish Inquisition's Palace, a prison for sodomites, its hidden homophobic messages & the Old Customs House at the starting point of El Camino Real, turned a safe territory for gay couples, centuries ago.

At St. Mary of the Instruction, we will talk about cloistered lesbians before a landmark place that we call "Crossroads of Diversity," where we share the stories of the cross-dressing ball of "Those 41" and that of Emiliano Zapata.

We will show you many more surprising, centuries-old secrets around convents & cantinas & will point you to 'Gay Bar Row' which you can visit in Part Two, booked separately.

For decades as a hobby & then as a professional activity, I have researched & shared the history of diversity that has been forgotten, left hidden or in the closet for most of its parts to help advance the fight for equality.

I have earned my National Tour Guide License & also a Hosting Diploma by Walt Disney University in Florida. My curated & focused walks showcase Women's, Indigenous, LGBT, Jewish, US American & other diverse sides of history in Mexico at its relevant sites.

I thrive to show our vast history, arts & traditions; from Mexico before Mexico & its founding in 1325 A.D., to date; not in a boring way but in one that I expect may amuse you.

I share the stories from the diverse communities that shaped us at places where it happened. Malinche, Luis Carvajal, Sor Juana, Salvador Novo, Frida Kahlo & Robert Brady are part of it.

Le lieu

Between the two main squares within the 16th century city limits, we will discover the LGBT side of history by walking on the scene between them, visiting hidden corners in the Historic Center with stories seldom told.

We will see Aztec ruins, discover the relationship between the vicereine & her lover nun, learn about the interpretation of monuments & sites by gay men at the turn of the 20th century & much more, spanning 700 years.

Carlos is a great storyteller--choosing when and how to share what in a way that kept me intrigued the entire tour. He generously gave us some extra time as well. The gay history of Mexico is truly fascinating!

Not only was it VERY interesting, but the content is important, unlike most of the touristy experiences that dominate this space. Carlos personalized the content to better relate to us and was generous enough to extend the tour due to our interest and his availability

Carlos was a great guide. Aside from the fact that he is extremely versed in the history of Mexico, he is also incredibly charming and entertaining. We have been to la CDMX numerous times but hasn’t taken a tour like this one before. It was great to experience the city through the stories Carlos told as we walked the various streets. We started with part 1 of the tour and will definitely take the other parts when we return.

Carlos was a great orator and extremely knowledgeable about the gay history of Mexico. He is extremely personable and he provides a unique perspective of the City that you can’t get from any other walking tour. Lastly, this tour is not just for those in the LGBT community, but has a little something for everyone. Can’t wait to come back to CDMX and do the other tours he hosts on the subject.

The ideal guide!! I’m really not a “walking tour” kind of guy, I prefer to do things on my own, but I was intrigued with an LGBTQ+ focused experience and I’m SO GLAD I chose this! From the moment we met up, I felt like I’d known Carlos forever, we really just clicked from the start. While he’s out years of work into crafting this walk through the historical center, none of it felt scripted, it was a true dialogue the whole time, with my mind being blown every few minutes about all the gaps in my historical understanding. It felt like an afternoon with an off-duty college professor, his depth of knowledge is astounding and inspiring. Since I was the only one on the tour, we got to chat about our lives and made a meaningful personal connection. Cannot recommended highly enough!!
