Gay Side of History at City's Top Sites

(Para español, contáctame)

In this one experience of many in the Gay History series, you will learn about LGBT+ traditions from the time of the Aztecs until today as we stroll by the city’s main monuments.

We will talk about the origins of Mexico as it became the Aztec Empire and of how “unspeakable sins” were punished, as we see the military quarters at the Aztec’s Main Temple.

You will learn about being a feminist lesbian in the 17th century as we visit the old economic hub of the Spanish Empire while famous buildings line the full way.

Homosexuality in the early 20th century is seen by Frida Kahlo's high school & that of "Los Contemporáneos," a group of gay scholars.

We will see the Spanish Inquisition's Palace, a prison for sodomites, its hidden homophobic messages & the Old Customs House at the starting point of El Camino Real, turned a safe territory for gay couples, centuries ago.

At St. Mary of the Instruction, we will talk about cloistered lesbians before a landmark place that we call "Crossroads of Diversity," where we share the stories of the "Dance of the 41," and that of Emiliano Zapata.

We will show you many more surprising, centuries-old secrets around convents & cantinas.

For decades as a hobby & then as a professional activity, I have researched & shared the history of diversity that has been forgotten, left hidden or in the closet for most of its parts to help advance the fight for equality.

I have earned my National Tour Guide License & also a Hosting Diploma by Walt Disney University in Florida. My curated & focused walks showcase Women's, Indigenous, LGBT, Jewish, US American & other diverse sides of history in Mexico at its relevant sites.

I thrive to show our vast history, arts & traditions; from Mexico before Mexico & its founding in 1325 A.D., to date; not in a boring way but in one that I expect may amuse you.

I share the stories from the diverse communities that shaped us at places where it happened. Malinche, Luis Carvajal, Sor Juana, Salvador Novo, Frida Kahlo & Robert Brady are part of it.

Le lieu

Between the two main squares within the 16th century city limits, we will discover the LGBT side of history by walking on the scene between them, visiting hidden corners in the Historic Center with stories seldom told.

We will see Aztec ruins, discover the relationship between the vicereine & her lover nun, learn about the interpretation of monuments & sites by gay men at the turn of the 20th century & much more, spanning 700 years.

This was Mexican history through a new lens. Hearing about the rich history of Mexico and how far it’s influence reached during and after colonization was very interesting and filled a missing part of my world history education. Adding in the history of homosexuality in Mexico gave the lesson a rich detail. We also had drinks at a cafe with a beautiful view of the square. I would highly recommend this tour.

This was a fantastic tour and one of the highlights of our trip. Carlos is super knowledgeable about Mexican history, and does a great job of weaving the LGBT experience through his stories.

Honestly this is the best tour I’ve ever been on. It really did change my perception of the world and it’s history. Carlos tells the amazingly compelling story of Mexico focusing on the relevance and influence of LGBT people in its creation. He uses artifacts that can be seen all around the city center to choreograph the story. This experience is worthwhile even for people who are familiar with Mexico city and it’s history.

This was my second time to do this walking tour with Carlos. I enjoyed it so much the first time I visited Mexico, I booked another tour on my second visit with my husband. A lot of Mexico’s history is evident in its buildings and art; however, Carlos brings the stories we think we know to full life through the lens of the gay and lesbian experiences in the historical times. Truly a pleasure, and I highly recommend to any lgbt visitors or allies.

Easily the best tour I’ve been on through Airbnb or generally for that matter. Carlos is extremely insightful and knowledgeable of history and has a gift for presenting it in engaging ways. Highly highly recommend booking this tour.
