Ce que vous allez faire

Karakami, or woodblock printed paper, originates from the Heian period (984-1185). At the time, high-society aristocrats regularly used Karakami to write letters and poems as it brought out the beauty in their writing. During that time, when production of karakami started in Kyoto, the capital, it permeated aristocratic society and began to be used for fusuma shoji (paper screens for sliding doors) in homes built in the shindenzukuri (palace) architectural style. Put simply, Kyo-Karakami is like a type of woodblock print. It uses printing blocks made from magnolia wood that are hand-carved with traditional patterns passed down from ancient times. To this day, we continue to use printing blocks from the Tempo Era (1830-1844) and observe the patterns, coloring materials, tools, and the traditions of old. In this experience, first you'll learn about Karakami by watching a video, then we'll take you to our factory. You can see how we make Karakami and you can see our traditional tools. Then, you can make hand printed post cards by using woodblocks with our traditional patterns. You'll have a choice of colored paper with silver and gold paint.

Fujiko: I used to work as an interior coordinator, and because of my experience, I got to know about Karakami. I'm hoping to share the new and traditional beauty of Karakami with you. Ayaka: I've always been a big fan of Kyoto's culture. Because of that, I moved to Kyoto a few years ago, and when I was looking for a job related to Kyoto's traditional culture, I found this place for Karakami. Some of the Karakami designs were made over one thousand years ago, but they are still very attractive. Akari: I'm an Airbnb experiences host. I host several tours. (https://www.airbnb.jp/experiences/292293). The first time I visited this Karakami shop, I was so attracted by how beautiful the designs are. I love the designs so much, I make my own business cards using Karakami. We're looking forward to seeing you soon!
