Au programme

We'll start on the river in front the silver circle sculpture and then weave around Brown University and College Hill, stopping to talk at lookouts, public art and private gardens while telling the story of Rhode Island's leading role in the slave trade of the 18th Century. Roger Williams called Rhode Island a "lively experiment." I'll do my best to report how that experiment worked out for Rhode Island and the nation. The walk is about miles and should take about 2 hours. It's hilly. So bring good shoes.

I was a newsman for 47 years: reporter, editor, columnist, webmaster. I now teach journalism at the University of Rhode Island. As a journalist, teacher, runner, reader of history and 18-year resident of Providence's Fox Point-College Hill neighborhood, I know the state's stories and hidden passages around Brown University and colonial Providence. Mine will be an amused and irreverent tour with time to indulge in the lives of the pious and the profane. By rights, Providence should be known as the place the American Revolution began, but the citizens had to keep it quiet. King George had a bounty on John Brown's head.

Le lieu

The Providence waterfront; John Brown's house on a hill; the scene of Buddy Cianci's first felony, the place where the Revolution started, but no one noticed; Brown University; H.P. Lovecraft Square; gardens tucked out of view; the library where Sarah Whitman dismissed Edgar Alan Poe; the site of the Snow Town race riot of 1831; the Roger Williams lookout; and the home of the colonial governor who tried to negotiate a peace with Britain.

Really great experience. Very informative. It’s a tour that touches on some of the major moments in Providence’s history and focuses on a few of the less well-known parts that you might not get from other tours. I learned a lot. Thanks!!

If you are interested in a fascinating presentation of a slice of the history of Rhode Island and Providence this tour is for you. Peter is a great narrator with a unique perspective. The walking is not too vigorous and the sites are all interesting. Highly recommended experience!

Peter is extremely knowledgeable and he has a very enjoyable tone. I learned so much about this city. Its history, its politics, its part in the early days of the revolution. Been showing off my newly acquired knowledge at work to the locals. They are impressed.

Spending an afternoon with Peter learning about the history if Providence told in vivid detail really made the rest of our weekend trip more engaging. Would strongly recommend to those looking to understand a bit more about the untold parts of American history from colonial times through modern day.
