Au programme

Explore Silvermine's beauty with a passionate, pro guide!

This is a wonderful opportunity to hike in a quieter area with unparalleled views of the central Cape Peninsula & Hout Bay from Noordhoek Peak! All the while you'll be hiking with a literal Silvermine local - we actually lived within the National Park in what's known as the Silvermine Valley. This area was Justin's childhood turf & Mark's office where the mountains were an extension of our garden.

We'll spend the morning (or afternoon) hiking a circular trail through diverse mountain Fynbos (pronounced: fane - boss) in the Silvermine section of the Table Mountain National Park.

The emphasis is on looking at the details of the unique biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom & we'll be stopping as we hike to chat to you about the different floral species we see within the Fynbos Biome. We'll walk you through just what makes Fynbos, Fynbos! Depending on the time of year you may see anything from beautiful little blue orchids to magnificent giant pink proteas. Wildlife is shy, however we may possibly see the majestic resident pair of Verreaux's Eagles soaring overhead in search of prey.

Our hike is on standard trails, so it's for all levels (family friendly) & we'll cover around 7km at an easy pace. In the warmer summer months bring swim gear as you may want to jump into the recreational Silvermine Dam at the end of the trail (when doing the morning schedule). It's so refreshing

We're a father & son guiding duo, Mark & Justin Hawthorne, with a unique Cape Town background of having lived within the National Parks' borders for almost 3 decades!

Mark is a Nature Conservationist by profession, starting off in 1982 as a Ranger and later as an Environmental Educator - spending just shy of 40 years working on the Table Mountain range.

Thanks to Mark's job, Justin had the privilege of growing up within the boundaries of the incredible Table Mountain National Park at Silvermine - the mountains here were their literal backyard!

Justin, who got into guiding back in 2007, spends roughly 240 days a year in the mountains & collects data on Klipspringers while doing so.

We live for sharing our love of nature by leading interpretive nature trails & outdoor excursions across the fynbos covered mountains of the Western Cape.

Amazing hole today at the Silvermine Nature Reserve. Justin is a very friendly guy and obviously loves what he does. He explained the various types of fynbos on the hike and constantly pointed out things I simply wouldn’t have noticed on my own. The hike itself was not too taxing which was great as I could concentrate on taking in the information and admiring the stunning views. Highly recommended.

It was a truly unique experience, Justin was very hospitable and friendly and is so passionate and unbelievably knowledgable about the plants, flowers and the area. Justin provided tea and homemade biscuits at the top where we had the added bonus of a spectacular view for miles around. Highly recommend to anyone who likes the outdoors.

Justin was INCREDIBLE!! He went above and beyond, spending more time than was technically allotted to make sure that we saw everything in Silvermine. He was so knowledgeable about every plant that we would ask about (in addition to every one that he told us about) and helped us interact with the Fynbos while still preserving nature. He was also incredibly friendly and went out of his way to schedule a hike on a date that wasn't on his schedule so that we would be able to have this experience. The experience was unique and so different to the typical hikes on Lion's Head, Table Mountain, etc. Highly highly recommend this experience with Justin!!

Hiking with Justin was such a wonderful experience. He was able to enhance our hiking experience immensely by teaching us about the natural environment that we were in. I learned a lot about Table Mountain National Park, the history of the mountain, and the flora and fauna that reside in the Fynbos ecosystem. The view at the top was stunning. I would recommend this hike to anyone!

This hike was fantastic and I loved every minute of it. Justin has a wealth of knowledge and his love for fynbos and the area really shines through. It was a delight to stop and inspect and talk about the different plants (and bugs and birds) we spotted and to learn about the ecosystem. The hike itself is easy-going with amazing views - it was great to pause at the top of the mountain for a snack and drink to take that all in. If you want to learn about fynbos and love stopping for "the little things", this walk is definitely a must!
