Upon arrival at the farm you will explore the vast farm area with a walking tour. You can see and learn about the multi-species mixes we plant and the biodiversity this creates within each field. You will meet our Jersey girls, watch the milking process in our parlour and Sam will engage in a Q&A for any questions you may have about our low impact style of farming. We will then take you to see our processing room - where the magic happens! We will explain the machinery and process used to pasteurise our rich milk, the bottling process and the journey from milk to ice cream. We will also serve up delicious treats for you to try. You will leave the experience with a glass bottle of the freshest Jersey milk to take home and enjoy and a new understanding of sustainable, natural, organic farming!

We (Sam and Katie) have both come from farming backgrounds and have worked hard within the agricultural sector since a young age. Our land base and livestock have been built up by ourselves over the years, after starting with nothing we feel this is quite an achievement.
Together we have a combined interest in farming sustainably and as naturally as possible, allowing all our cows to rear their own calves is fundamental to our holistic beliefs. Although this is not a modern farming method it does take us back to basics, back to our roots and back to the ways our grandparents kept dairy cows.

Le lieu

Deep in the Devon countryside you will see and explore our 400 acre working farm. The majority of the experience will be out in the elements starting with a farm tour of the land and our lush green paddocks. Heading into the shelter of the barn for the milking experience and a Q&A with Sam. Down at the processing room you can glimpse inside to see how our products are made.

I visited Taw River Dairy with 3 of my friends on 2nd July 2020. We arrived to the farm almost 30 minutes early but were quickly met by Ellie who welcomed us to the farm, directed us towards a place to park and walked with us to see some of the dairy cows. After a short period we were then introduced to Sam who immediately came across as very down to earth and knowledgeable about the farm. We were first given a brief summary of details about the farm before then being guided inside the barn to understand the milking process. Sam described the process and then offered us the chance to milk the cows ourselves! After physically milking the cow using the ''old school'' method we were then shown how the farm use the equipment to extract the milk. Throughout the process Sam was very informative and friendly answering our questions. After a brief tour of the remainder of the barn we travelled up to the other side of the farm to watch how the pasteurising and bottling process operated. After lots more questions and learning we were then offered an ice cream to enjoy in the sun. Whilst all the flavours looked delicious, I would personally recommend the traditional Jersey Milk flavour! Upon leaving the farm Sam presented us with our cold bottle of Jersey milk which came from the cows the same morning! It doesn't get more fresh than that! Overall, I would highly recommend this tour of the Taw River Dairy farm as Sam and Ellie were honest and open about all aspects of the farm and we all learned a lot.

We loved getting to visit the dairy farm and learn about Sam's ethical practices. It was so fun to milk a cow for the first time, see a newborn calf, and pet the cows! We learned so much.

A great insight into dairy farming on a small scale and using more traditional, sustainable methods. My wife and I loved every moment. Thanks

We have just had our tour of the dairy and met the herd of beautiful little cows. Sam was a kind, thoughtful and extremely knowledgeable host and he taught us all about where the milk comes from and how the process is done with the ethical treatment of the cows and sustainability at the forefront of their practice. His passion for what he did shone through and it was a real pleasure to meet him. We have learnt so much about cows and gave a couple of thema good scratch! We also milked a cow which was really interesting. Thank you so much, I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone with an interest in finding out more about ethical/sustainable farming and animal management. I would imagine that if we had children, they would have absolutely loved it too. The ice cream at the end of the tour was delicious and we can't wait to try our bottle of fresh milk too. I wish we had a similar dairy nearer to where we live.

A wonderful experience unique to Devon. We loved getting to see the friendly and surprisingly photogenic jersey cows up close, having a shot at milking, learning about the cows and tasting the delicious ice-cream. Our group loved the trip and it was the highlight of our trip to Dartmoor.
