Ce que vous allez faire

You'll join Margaret and Karl for daily morning chores on Ten Apple Farm. We'll start by milking the goats. We raise French Alpine dairy goats, and milk 3-4 goats by hand twice a day, every day -- something we've been doing for 14 years. You'll learn how to milk, and help us feed the goats their breakfast of hay and grain. On our diversified farm, we have lots of animals, pigs, sheep, chickens, and often turkeys or ducks. We'll tour the farm, feeding and watering all the animals and talk about their care and the role each one plays on our diversified homestead. At the end of chores, weather permitting, we'll put the goats out in their pasture, and then relax in the farmhouse kitchen for breakfast of homemade scones or biscuits and other farm goodies.

Ce qui est inclus

Food
At the end of chores we'll share baked goods from our farm kitchen -- scones or biscuits with jam or other farm preserves…
Drinks
We'll have coffee, tea, juice, iced tea, and seltzer that we flavor with simple syrups that we make on the farm

Karl & Margaret

Margaret Hathaway and Karl Schatz are the husband and wife team behind five books on food and farming, including the memoir The Year of the Goat, the guide Living With Goats, and the two volumes of the Portland, Maine Chef’s Table cookbook. Margaret is a writer who has worked in book publishing, corporate communications, and as manager of New York’s Magnolia Bakery. Karl is a photographer and communications strategist who has worked at ABC Television, as an editor at Time Magazine, and as Director of Aurora Photos. In 2003 the couple left NYC to explore the world of goats across the USA. Since 2005, they have lived with their daughters on Ten Apple Farm, a homestead in southern Maine, where they raise dairy goats, tend a large garden and small orchard, make cheese, lead goat hikes, teach workshops, and operate a guest house

Le lieu

We'll start in our 1901 barn, feeding and watering the goats and chickens, and milking the goats. Then we'll head outside to feed and water the pigs and other poultry, touring the outside areas of the farm, like the orchard, grape arbor, and garden. We'll stop at the garden and do some harvesting and a little gardening: weeding, pruning, or pest management. We'll put the goats out to pasture, and then to the farm kitchen for breakfast treats!
