For more information about our farm keep up with us ...friend us at ....Cair Paravel Farm.

POOL and HOT TUB
A short walk from Tumnus House will bring you to a seasonal salt water swimming pool (Memorial Day - Labor Day) and year-round hot tub that is shared by all Cair Paravel Farm residents and guests. The area is surrounded by a high tensile fence with latching and chained gates. In the interest of safety we ask that the gates remained closed and latched at all times. There is no lifeguard on duty so swimming and tubbing is at your own risk. No running, diving, food or glass in the enclosure.

HOT TUB:
Do not add anything to the water in the hot tub such as oils and herbs. They will cloud the water and clog the filters. We then have to empty the tub, clean it and restart it which takes a day. If you turn down the heat please return the temperature to 103 F. when you leave the tub.

NATURE TRAIL
A well marked trail (moderate) encircles the open pastures and woods around Cair Paravel. We are located close to Shenandoah National Park and you may encounter wildlife similar to that in the park. Trail maps for these areas are provided. Please realize that the wildlife can be dangerous and consult the Shenandoah National Park's website for further detailed information.

COMMUNICATION:
We love to greet our guests when they arrive and show them around Tumnus as well as provide suggestions for local hikes, activities, and dining. We send our confirmed guests a link to our website. Farmstead Products and other information is located at the website. We communicate with our guests through the Airbnb Message Center.

FARMHOUSE:
The Cair Paravel Farmhouse is just a short walk down the mountain though since we are an operating farm we are frequently out and about. Guests can send a message through the Message Center and we will respond as soon as we are able.

ACTIVITIES:
There are many area attractions and activities- hiking in the Shenandoah National Park, visiting Monticello or Montpelier, following the Monticello Wine Trail or the Brew Ridge Trail, and checking out the work of Virginia Artisans in the local shop: Noon Whistle Pottery. We are close to both Charlottesville and Harrisonburg. We are in a relatively 'remote' location so plan on a drive time of thirty minutes or more. For other activities and attractions check out the Guidebook we send to our registered guests. Approximate travel times generated by mapping services are listed in the Sightseeing section. SNP back country is a 5-10 minute walk from the farm entrance.

HIKING GUIDES:
If you are considering hiking take a look at Hiking Upward. The site has great maps and descriptions of the trails as wells as a great rating system.

AIRPORT:
The nearest airport is the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport. Rental cars are available at the airport. To reach the farm is an easy half hour drive. A rural transportation service, the Greene County Transit, operates Monday through Saturday.

FARM:
Cair Paravel is a sustainable farm practicing permaculture and applies biodynamic practices to our gardening and animal husbandry. We pasture raise our critters, supplementing their diet with Sunrise Farms soy-free non-GMO feed. The hogs and lambs are processed by a USDA inspected abattoir. We send our registered guests a Farm a link to our website prior to their arrival. Additional local sources for farm raised food are listed in the Guidebook. We provide a Farm Tour for our registered guests April through mid-October. FOR THE GOOD OF ALL OF OUR HEALTH, FARMSTEAD TOURS ARE SUSPENDED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE (3/21/20)

Whitt is a retired executive Chef who has worked in all types of hospitality environments for 35 years. Martha, is a retired educator. Managing a small country Inn and restaurant for 12 of those years has given us ample experience to create and manage our unique Yurt as well as our other lodgings. My family and I are in process of creating a self supporting and sustainable farm homestead and lodgings and we offer welcome to one and all. In addition to our enterprises we are grateful stewards of nearly 60 acres of spectacular mountain land, most of which is as undisturbed as possible with an easily accessible nature trail winding throughout the property. As a working farm we also have a multitude of gentle critters and an abundance of home grown foods. Whitt grew up in Hawaii and knows well about relaxing and enjoying life and all it has to offer, and believe we have created a place where everyone can share in the same. Martha grew up in Bethesda, a suburb just outside of DC and spent every possible moment at Cair Paravel. Now retired from teaching and educational administration I spend my days at the farm or volunteering the the Virginia Master Naturalists. Other folks you may see on the farm are Madi, Grant, Mark and Ruth. Madi and Grant (photo with goats) work with the animals and gardens. Mark is the master of the trails and you may see Ruth running.
