St. Louis, Missouri, États-Unis

The Soulard neighborhood is an economically and culturally diverse community located less than two miles south of downtown St. Louis. The area is named after Antoine Pierre Soulard, a pioneer Frenchman who first came to the area in the late 1790's, as a surveyor for the King of Spain.

Soulard is one of the oldest neighborhoods in St. Louis, with original housing stock dating from the mid-1800's, and exhibiting a broad range of architectural styles. The historic streets of Soulard are lined with red brick townhomes, many originally built by and for newly-arriving immigrants from Germany and Bohemia, to work in the area's numerous breweries.

Today, those structures have been restored, renovated and rehabbed, and many have been converted into music clubs, shops and restaurants, many of which offer outdoor dining in elaborate courtyards. The historic churches of Soulard, also built by St. Louis’ immigrant communities, also welcome visitors throughout the year.

The neighborhood was granted federal historic district designation in 1972.

Soulard acknowledges its French heritage each year with a Mardi Gras fête in February/March. Revelers also flock to the neighborhood throughout the year for various festivals, fairs and post sporting-event entertainment.

We are veterans of radio, having been syndicated on over 700 radio stations across the U.S., while hosting local radio shows in Los Angeles, New York and San Diego, before returning to our home town and first love, St. Louis. We are also comedy writers and have contributed material to national television’s comedy programming, including the sitcom WKRP IN CINCINNATI. In 2008, Joy opened the popular St. Louis restaurant, The Fountain on Locust, where she hand-painted the interior space’s art deco murals entirely by herself. Having renovated a 100 year-old home 43 years ago when first married, we went on to restore 6 houses in 3 cities over the years. After living in a 120 year-old, 12,000 SF mansion in St. Louis’s Central West End for 20 years, we found something even BETTER - the outrageously unique and highly ornamented Arzt House in Soulard (our Airbnb guests will be staying in the Arzt House Cottage, directly adjacent to the main house). The minute we saw the Arzt House, we knew our current 120 year-old home wasn’t old enough!! And since our two children had left the large nest, it was time to downsize! Thus began the process of acquiring and renovating the historically significant 142 year-old property that includes the Arzt House Cottage.
