Le logement
Home-stay Hostel in Kona Coffee Country! Started out as ready-on-demand berths for sailing buddies, but they're "aging-out" of backpack travel. It was pilot-berth futons in the loft, is now 4 bunks in the Sun Room or twin beds (convertible to a King-Size Bed upon request) in our "semi-private" space (Suite Coffee). You all get to share the magic of an imaginatively re-constructed '40's vintage coffee shack! Holualoa Hostel is a Home-Stay located on the Coastview slope of dormant Mt. Hualalai Volcano - 1,560 feet above sea level. Cool, comfortable, quiet, affordable. Cozy rooms that accommodate as many as 4 people (capacity is 6). Shared bath, Wi-Fi included, Roadside Parking Only! Claw-foot (Kohler Antique) has a milky-way view and a bubbler. Fills to the brim giving a true "Hot Tub experience!" More amenities offered at this property.

Weekly rate based on double occupancy. Group rates are negotiable.

Accès des voyageurs

Autres remarques
Located near the beginning of the Historic Cultural Corridor known as "Pulama 'ia Kona", we are just the second driveway N. of Hawai'i Astronaut Ellison Onizuka's birthplace. We'll tell you more if you ask...

Aloha! My introduction to Hostels came during my final year at University. Icelandic Airlines to Luxembourg, train to Geneva, then Innsbruck for some skiing. Always had in mind the title to a Hemingway short story; "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place". Later in life during Sailmaking days, I was at Hostels while sailing in the Canadian Olympic Regatta at Kingston, Ontario (CORK). There I adopted John and Mary Munn as "Ohana Grandparents" after exceptional care over a 4 year period. They responded with a lake-front living room recital by one of their University Student Boarders, on a Stradivarius! Much later I travelled to Hostels at Whitstable, Kent (GB), then Tornado Olympic Catamaran World Championships at Travemunde on the Baltic Sea. Later, a Sidney Harbor 18 Footer World Championship and a visit to Auckland, NZ shopping for a Bruce Farr "Quarter-Tonner" to race. All done in reasonable comfort and at minimal expense. My hosts and surroundings seemed so generous, so warm and welcoming, so "family". Way later, when I married, I graduated to Bed & Breakfast Inns for travels through New Zealand and Alaska, then ran one here in Kona for a few years (3 Bears B&B). I've been re-building a '40's vintage "Sugar Shack" here in Kona, for over 35 years. It's a place in which I truly enjoy spending my time. With my daughter on her way out the door to college, I'd like to establish a reputation for hospitality of my own, so I don't miss her too much while she's away. I've been building a private library for many years and literally "raised the roof" to accommodate my growing collection which now extends along one wall and up 14' to the ridge beam. There's a reading loft up there, a fine lookout over the old wagon trail or into my coffee/green tea orchard. Great perch for sunsets, too. The house is full of artifacts from my travels. "My Reliquery" I call it, since it's full of relics and collectibles of nearly "incalculable value". That's not meant to mean "valuable" in any "real" sense to anyone else... Since memories are countless, I consider myself a millionaire. "Milllionaire of the Mind", perhaps, but one who "Lives in the Na'au", a Hawaiian concept I'll be pleased to discuss further, upon your arrival?

I live and work on-site; on my guest accommodations, I work at the National Park and am a current college student, doing ongoing work on improvements to the overall facility or care of the coffee orchard and green tea garden that are the foreground for our newly-revealed view of the shoreline & ocean horizon. I'm available for lots of interaction or I can immerse myself otherwise, staying entirely out of your way.
