This magical villa on the hills of Exambela was built for two professors who shared it with their 4 children and 13 grandchildren, and who used it every summer to write, research, relax and connect with friends. It is a perfect retreat for artists, writers, academic sabbaticals, families, friends, or a luxurious romantic getaway. Villa Barou, a two-level traditional Cycladic white washed home, is surrounded by stone patios, local vegetation, and spectacular views.

The upper level consists of the main entrance, a very large living and dining area (Mary’s Great room), the main kitchen, a master bedroom with king bed(European size), and a bedroom with two twin beds and study area. Each bedroom has an adjoining bathroom. The lower level is separated from the upper level and can be accessed through a separate entrance. It features a large bedroom area with two king beds(European Size), kitchenette, table for eating, and a second bedroom with a queen bed (European size) with built-in closet and a bathroom. An outdoor stone staircase connects the two levels.

This house can accommodate up to 8 people, and is also an ideal rental for two families. Example: upper level max. 4 people, lower level max. 4 people. There is also an aerobed inflatable mattress onsite in case an additional bed is needed. The house is 211 square meters, or approximately 2,270 square feet. The private land area is approximately 3 stremma, or 3/4 of a US acre.

Villa Barou is situated on top of a magnificent hillside surrounded by olive trees and stone walled terraces at the edge of the residential village of Exambela. The serene surroundings have a constant breeze with superb panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, villages, hills, and mountains on surrounding Sifnos. There are also views to other islands in the Aegean such as Paros Island.

The site can be accessed from the main road where you may leave your car at a small parking lot, which is a 2-3 minute walk from the house via a public paved stone path. Guests who rent scooters from local agencies can ride them down the public path straight to the house. The house is 10 -15 minutes walking distance from the centrally-located village of Apollonia, away from the shops, bars, bakeries, and restaurants. There are also two local grocery stores (one is the largest on the island) in Exambela, about 5-10 minutes walking distance.

Emplacement

Milos, Grèce

THE VILLA
Villa Barou is located in Exambela, one of several villages that border Apollonia. Exambela is mostly residential, with two grocery stores (one is the largest on the island), about 5-10 minutes walking distance from the villa. Also within walking distance is the Monastery of Panagia Vrysiani (1642), which houses a small ecclesiastical museum with rare books and Byzantine icons. The Villa is walking distance to the central village Apollonia (10 -15 minutes) and approximately 10-15 minute drive to most beaches.

THE ISLAND
Known for its beautiful beaches, pottery, poetry, and some of the best food in the Cyclades, Sifnos is a sizeable and mountainous island covered in olive groves and almond and fig trees. A constant breeze from the Aegean carries with it scents of the many wild aromatic herbs that dot the hillsides. Among the stepped stonewalled mountain slopes are small farm houses, threshing floors, and dovecotes, part of the richness of the history and architecture of the island. There are a number of villages to explore by way of an expanded network of public walking paths, some of which are centuries old. These paths also connect visitors to over 350 churches, each of which has its own panigyri. A Panigyri is a traditional Greek festival that is both religious and social in nature, where locals eat, drink, and dance together through the night in honor of a specific patron saint. Panigyria are frequent in the summer months from June through September.

All visitors to Sifnos arrive in the port of Kamares, a seaside village with many waterfront cafés, tavernas, and shops to explore, as well as its own long sandy beach. About 5km (3.1mi) uphill from Kamares on a plateau is the bustling capital of Apollonia. Known as the center of nightlife on Sifnos, Apollonia has many shops, bakeries, cafes, restaurants, bars, and amenities such as banks, a post office, town hall, travel agents, pharmacies, and gas stations. Apollonia’s “steno” or central strip is where visitors can indulge in late-night dancing and live music. In the central tree-shaded village square you will find the quaint Folklore and Popular Art Museum with exhibits of historical objects used by locals in everyday life, including household items, traditional costumes, and agricultural tools.

Less than a mile to the north of Apollonia is Artemonas, known for its mansions with flowered gardens. To the east is the former capital Kastro, a beautiful and picturesque cliff-top village with alleyways and whitewashed houses. Kastro is host to the island’s archaeological museum that has excavations from the island on display, including marble heads and Hellenistic sculptures dating back from the 6th to the 1st century BC.

Sifnos is an island that has it all: natural beauty, rich history and culture, places to relax and places to party, outdoor activities, delicious local food, and much more. We invite you to visit this gem in the Cyclades and experience it firsthand!
