Need a change of scenery? Summertime on the river is great! Stay with us and enjoy river and town amenities. Drop in your kayak or SUP at the river access beside the house. No time to grocery shop? Walk to the restaurants in town to enjoy outdoor seating or takeout. Several are open with outside dining. Enjoy some history too in this 1750s home. Come and enjoy our place in the Town of Tappahannock, which was once described in a poem of old as the “lovely little nest of quietness and rest”.

Le logement
Originally built circa 1750 and operated as an Ordinary at one point, the Customs House was one of the original structures in town utilized for the collection of taxes as goods were brought in from ships that docked at the wharf, remnants of which are still visible from the fabulous large, second story porch with river view. This brick, colonial, multi-story home (note there are lots of stairs) with porches facing both the town and the water, has lovely main floor living space with large rooms, ten foot ceilings and original pine floors. On the main floor there is a living room and kitchen (note: the kitchen is basic but who needs to cook, plus there is a grill), small sunroom, half bath, and a long hall/dining room. Upstairs there are two bedrooms (one full size and one with twins) and a full bath. A small upper yard is perfect for grilling out, playing cornhole, or lounging in the hammock. The town of Tappahannock is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and offers a handful of restaurants easily reached on foot, a small museum, local art gallery, ice cream shop, small public beach, and quaint streets for a run, bike or walk through town while checking out the other historic buildings. The house is also right around the corner from St. Margaret’s School. Numerous wineries are within an easy drive, as is Belle Isle State Park, Stratford Hall, and George Washington’s Birthplace (who is rumored to have stayed here too).

Accès des voyageurs
Guests have access to the two main floors and will have the house, porch and yard space to themselves as the hosts will not be on premise. The house is appropriate only for children over 7 years old as there is a high balcony and lots of stairs.

Autres remarques
St. Margaret’s School and restaurants are within walking distance. Most retaurants are open ( To Do Cafe, Northern Neck Burger, Java Jacks, Relish (warsaw)), Route 17. Richmond, VA is about 1 hour away. Belle Isle State Park is about 30 minutes. Stratford Hall is close by as is George Washingtons Birthplace and numerous wineries. There is a small brewery in Montross.

I love to travel, read, spend time with my family, and being on the water. After a long work week, there is nothing better than having a glass of wine paired with some oysters while enjoying a river view.
Pendant votre séjour
Guests will have access to the two main floors of the house, the porches and yard. I will be available via phone and possibly in person if necessary.
