Le logement
An Inn of nostalgy and delight

Atami is a recreation area which is dotted with villas on the sun-soaked mountainside of Shonan province. In the contrast to the seaside with many large hotels, there are beautiful villas and recreation houses of millionaires and large corporations which were built in the Taisho and Showa periods on the mountain side.
Guest house Kogoï is a superb private accommodation limited to one group a day. It used to be an old private recreation house of a big company and it has put on ages more than 90-years with natural hot spring.
Izusan area, in Atami City, where the inn has been built is one of a place of the numerous hot spring resort in Japan on the foot of Izusan Shrine. The forest in this area where Yoritomo and Masako have met secretly is still called "Kogoi no Mori" (forest of lovers).

●Taste of the building

It only takes 10 minutes from JR Atami station where Shinkansen stops by the inn’s pick-up car.
Sukiya architecture, built in 1938 as a recreation center for Oji Paper Industries, is fully loaded of highlights.
"When I heard that this house was for sale, the first sentiment which came to my mind was the very time-honored house of Osamu Dazai's novel “Shayou”.
The old house had an impression on me as if this were the house of Kazuko and her mother moved from the mansion in Tokyo. They had been the members of peerage, viscount, who felt down after the world warⅡ." Owner Iwaguchi says.

When you open the entrance sliding door, you will see old colored-concrete floor (tataki) which is decorated with plaster and obsidian. The “Showa modern design” of white and black is outstanding and attracting.

When you go up the entrance and enter the right side, you’ll see three rooms. In the first room, there are antique sofas which are harmonized with the bright golden clouds on fusuma. It’s alike the downfall family’s furniture outfit carried from their previous mansion.
The main room with an alcove called tokonoma welcomes guests with hanging pictures of the four seasons.
The next one is a small chamber facing a small garden with the carving of Mt.Fuji on the cedar board above elegant akari shoji (lighting windows). You can also remove all the fusuma which divides the room in three to use rooms as one big room. You can use the rooms to your satisfaction.
The corridor is spread with tatami along the main garden. And if you look up, you would see the ceiling not covered with ceiling boards. Instead, you would see the beauty shapes of elaborated constructions which ancient artisans have created. The large old glass doors in the corridor seem to be different from present products which make us feel nostalgic.
Going up the stairs to the second floor, there is a small room with a balcony where you can see the ocean.
If you are tired of the bustle of the feast downstairs, why don't you turn off your online game and surround boardgames with somebody tonight? In the entertainment room of upstairs, there are a various board games for fun.
From the window of the entertainment room, you can enjoy bright sea view spreads outside, you can see the Manazuru Peninsula, the silhouette of the Miura Peninsula and the Boso Peninsula in the distance on a clear day.

When you feel like sleeping, please take a rest with your favorite yukata. In addition all above, you can enjoy the playfulness of the previous owner and the skills of carpenters and craftsmen which are remained everywhere in the house.
As well as those who like architecture, this is an inn which anyone can enjoy.

●Bath
Atami is known for its excellent hot springs. The "Hashiri yu", the source of spring of Izusan Hot Spring Village, has its history since the Nara period (710-794) .
It’s the same hot spring source which is drawn to this inn. Of course, free flowing.
According to the analysis table. It is sodium and calcium chloride spring (low osmotic pressure, weak alkaline, high temperature spring). If you put this water in your mouth, you can feel a light salty taste. Also you can feel the heat of hot spring comes into your body deeply.
The bathtub and washing place are spread with precious Izu stone panels. You would calm down with placid blue color of Izu stone.
They say that after Izu peninsula’s collide against Japan mainland 20 million years ago and the sedimentation of the volcanic ash and lava from ancient submarine volcanoes, it became to be possible to mine precious, beautiful Izu stone.
This special stone has a far infrared effect. Therfore, it has been used as materials of bathrooms.
After your happy relaxing bathing time, please get into the thick futon of the inn and sleep deeply until the morning.

●Meals

Kogoï is a guest house, so you can bring your own meal, but you can also enjoy the inn's specialty "Rosanjin-style sukiyaki" if you want.
Rosanjin Kitaoji, who made his name as a multi-artist, ceramic artist and calligrapher in the Showa era. Also he is known as a rare gourmand, and he owned “Hoshigaoka saryo”, a membership-based exclusive restaurant in Tokyo(1925-1945). He is said to be a model of Yuzan Kaibara in the manga "Oishinbo".
The sukiyaki, created by Rosanjin, is a dainty dish that is enjoyed alternately with the finest Kobe beef and white leeks cut into 2 cm pieces in heated broth.
For breakfast, you would enjoy savory and stomach-friendly tea porridge, with umeboshi (salted plums), seasonal pickles, and kamaboko, which is the taste of the owner’s hometown Osaka, at the separated dining room with refreshing atmosphere.

● How to use, how to enjoy

Guest House Kogoï is a private guest house limited to one group a night. Therefore, please use it with your family, relatives and group of friends. Of course, the inn has viral disinfection equipment including air purifiers, sterilizers, to keep the cleaning procedure which is based on the regulations of the ministry of health, labor and welfare for safety.
By using the entire building fully, you can use for variety of services such as social gatherings, as well as memorial events, cousin's meetings, workshops, and training camps. There are also fully supported fast optical fiber internet services and Wi-Fi access point. So, you can have smooth online meetings. And you can do your telework with a color laser printer, projector and screen of 55inches 4k television. In addition, you can have a joyful BBQ party in the garden after your work.

"Kogoï" has more unique aspects. Atami, an old hot spring resort, has been flourishing in the traditional Japanese pleasure quarters.

As of 2021, more than 120 geisha women in Atami who went through rigorous training of the artistic accomplishments are still active.
Every year, the Geisha Association of Atami holds a florid dance show “Atami Odori” (canceled in 2021).
At Kogoï, you can call geisha for your party for your entertainment. However, geisha cannot be sent anywhere you want. It seems to be senseless to say, but the facility where geisha would treat someone has to get a permission of the public safety commission.
"Kogoï" has full permission to hire geisha. So, you can enjoy traditional Japanese music, dance, game. Why don't you add more glamour to your social gatherings?
The owner says "Especially young people feel awkward to meet geisha for unfamiliar fair system. But their flourish performance art and stylish chatter is attracting so much. It is standard that one geisha to be called for 4 to 5 guests, if you calculate for each person, it is about as same as drinking at an average night club.”
A blast gathering at a reasonable price, it definitely would be an unforgettable memory of your journey."

● Atami town walk

After enjoying at the inn, you can also walk around the town of Atami on the next day. You can use taxi to the town, and your luggage will be delivered to the locker at the station (pin number will be notified later. It is also possible to use shipping service of the inn).
Here are recommendations of Atami tourism by the owner.

Izusan Shrine and Hashiri yu

If you go down the slope in front of the inn and turn left and walk a little along route 135, you can see "Aizome-bashi" bridge which is painted in vermilion. Going over the bridge, you will see an underlying cross walk with traffic lights. The descending way is to "Hashiri yu", and ascending way is to Izusan Shrine.
First of all, when you go down the stone steps, there is an old hot spring "Hashiri yu" with a history of 1,300 years at the source of Izusan Hot Spring Village.170 liters of 70℃ hot water still gushes out every minute from 5 meter deep of the cave.
It is not far from the inn, so please go and take a walk. It’s worth to visit.
After the tour of the Hashiri yu, you should go up the stone steps to the top, and you will see the “torii”, the gate of Izusan Shrine. This is the place where Yoritomo Minamoto and Masako Hojo have met for the first secretly.
There is a "stone stool" in the middle of a quiet shrine.
They say that this is the place where the ancient lovers have told each other through the night. It is said that there was an old Shinto ceremony that couples prayed to the gods for good marriage. It is said that it came true, and young men and women gathered from various places of Japan.

Italian restaurant Mon

For a delightful lunch during a city walk. If you like Showa Modern architecture, it is a restaurant with an eye-catching appearance. Not only the architecture, but also the food is wonderful. Carpaccio with local fish, pasta dishes with various kinds of sauces, and my favorite, Pizza. The buttery nice flavored pie dough crust is excellent.

Chinese Restaurant Koka

There used to be a lot of novel writers who had set up the house in Atami or had been house-arrested in the inn by the editors for their creations. Ango Sakaguchi (1906-1955) was also one of them since he was a popular novelist of those days. He loved an authentic Chinese restaurant “Koka” that has been for more than 90 years now. The delighting Chinese soba, fried ankake yakisoba, jumbo shumai, etc attract everyone. However, it is a relaxed atmosphere loved by local people.

Bar Dr. Smuggler

An authentic bar with 400 kinds of liquors from all over the world. Ask the knowledgeable master for favorite style of drinking. It would be good to sip and compare rare barrels of whiskey, various kinds of cocktails based on your favorite liquor. Please enjoy the tranquil atmosphere with nice muddler handling of the master.
