Le logement
Before booking, please read our entire description carefully to see if the space is a good fit for your needs. Our antique building is suited best to travelers who appreciate its quirks and care about preserving it for future generations.

We are fully licensed and registered with the city of Kyoto as a lodging provider.

The building began its life over 200 years ago as an ageya where geisha entertained, and then became a ryokan about 100 years ago. Now we only only take one booking at a time for the second floor suite, and the first floor has a coffee shop and bar. It has been officially recognized as an historic scenic property by the city of Kyoto.

On the first floor, you'll find a western style room with vaulted ceilings and many stained glass designs dating back to the early 1900s. The space houses our coffee shop and bar, which is usually open from 3 p.m. 'til 10 p.m. (closed on Tuesdays and occasionally for special events). Periodically we host concerts and other events in the space--please ask us for details about events during your stay!

Once you climb the stairs to the second floor, the three bedrooms, living rooms, and soaking tub are yours to enjoy after days of Kyoto sightseeing. The atmosphere downstairs is usually relaxed and quiet, so the upstairs remains peaceful for airbnb guests.

Accès des voyageurs
The guest space does NOT include a kitchen or any place for food preparation. There are a variety of restaurants within walking distance.

The space does NOT include a laundry facility. There is a small coin laundry about a 5 minute walk from our place.

Large groups please take note: there is only one toilet and one shower.

The guest space includes:
-3 separate tatami mat bedrooms
-1 large tatami mat living room
-Western-style parlor
-Traditional futons for sleeping (set up according to number of guests)
-Free Wi-Fi
-AC in bedrooms and living room for heating/cooling
-Large bath/shower room with soaking tub
-Western style toilet
-Minifridge
-Hot water kettle and tea
-Small combination lock safe

Autres remarques
Events at Kinse: We occasionally have concerts in the 1st floor cafe/bar space, often jazz, DJ events, singer/songwriters, or instrumental music. Guests are always welcome to attend our live music events for no charge. We ask musicians to finish their sets by 10:00 p.m. which means that all is usually quiet by 11:00 p.m.~midnight. If you have any questions about planned events, just send us a message before booking and we'll let you know what's on the calendar.

Ikebana workshops: Seanacey is trained in Japanese flower arranging (ikebana) and has been certified by the Sogestsu school of ikebana as an instructor. She offers ikebana workshops in English in the cafe/bar space available for booking here: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/129666

Multi-Use Building: The upstairs space will be yours to use exclusively, but the front entrance and lobby are shared with the cafe/bar.

Yamato the cat: We have an extremely friendly black cat who sometimes makes appearances in the cafe/bar. He lives in a separate space downstairs and is never allowed into the guest space upstairs.

Kyoto, Préfecture de Kyoto, Japon

We are in a quiet neighborhood, which was historically a geisha district but is now a residential area. Our place is one stop away on the JR line from Kyoto Station. Access to downtown Kyoto (shijo street, gion, etc.) takes about 20 minutes by bus, 10~15 minutes by taxi, 15 minutes by bicycle.

Nearby attractions:

--Nishihonganji Temple, 10 min walk. Named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is a working temple where you can experience buddhist services early in the morning. Impressive wooden temple structure dating to 1591. In the neighborhood to the east of the temple you can find shops selling incense, rosary beads, altars, singing bowls, and other Buddhist items.

--Sumiya Museum, 2 min walk: Learn more about the geisha district heritage of the neighborhood with a visit to this historic building and garden.

--Central Market, 5 min: Kyoto's version of the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo. Walk around in the morning to see seafood, meat, and produce for sale. Look for ceramics and other Japanese kitchenware in the covered market area. Try a traditional Japanese breakfast at one of the local eateries. If you plan to go here, be sure to ask us for directions!

--Japanese-style baths, 2 min: After a day of temple viewing, soak and sauna your aches away at a nearby bathhouse. Your pick between the "super sento" style place (multiple soaking pools and a rooftop bath) and a smaller neighborhood bathhouse.

Guests are also welcome to join us in the cafe/bar space downstairs during business hours of 3~10pm. We don't serve meals but have coffee, tea, light snacks, and a selection of Japanese whisky and other alcohol. There are several local restaurants within a 10 minute walk of our place.
