This price is for one person per night, add $25 per person per night including children + $28 one time fee. Queen double & a single bed (each 2 metres long). Bookings of 4 or more have a 2nd bedroom with a double bed (2.15 metre). If you need a 2nd room for less than 4 or if you book for 2 and each want a bed - an extra charge of $15 to be paid on arrival. Use of our kitchen/fridge/stove/microwave/plates/etc. 5-10 min walk to cafes, supermarkets, takeaways ... For a 6th or 7th person see below.

Le logement
A large airy front room with a single bed and a Queen size double. All furniture has been recycled and most are native woods. For young children we can put a mattress on the floor or use padding on the single bed so they can't fall out. We have a folding cot you can use but while it has been thoroughly cleaned and is hygienic, it looks very dirty. The 2nd bedroom (only for bookings of 4 or more, unless pre-arranged) is smaller.
We call this budget because we live simple. All amenities are there but are old or recycled. There's wi fi but no tv. For a 6th person - a mattress on the floor of either room. For 7 people: There's a fold out double couch in the living room.

The large guest room has a Queen size bed and a single bed, a desk, and you have access to the rest of the house as much as you wish, etc. The bathroom (with toilet + shower) is shared. There is a lock on the door. There is an extra charge of $15 if an extra change of linen is required during your stay or if 2 of you use separate beds or if you book for less than 4 and want the second room. AirBNB doesn't allow for an optional extra and so we ask for this in cash on arrival.

The 6th person can choose to either sleep on mattress on the floor in either bedroom. Usually people choose the larger bedroom for this and so one couple has a private room and 4 others sleep in the other room. We also have a fold out couch in the living room which is open to the kitchen but that is less private. This is only available for bookings of 7. You share the house with just us and we are often either outside working in the gardens or in our room at our computers.
Bathroom + your room are tidy and spacious and there's shelving in the bathroom just for your things. We have plug converters for most countries.
There is a large verandah with tables and a view of trees, birds, etc, you can use.

Kawakawa is home to the famed Hundertwasser toilets and has a high Maori population + is only 10-15 km from the Bay of Islands coast. Our house is in a quiet street and a 5 min walk through a park into the centre of the town which has mini-markets, a very well stocked chemist, restaurants + take aways, library, garages, and so on. Northland's heated swimming pool is only a 3 min walk up the street.
The drive way is very steep and you can park down our drive way or we can park for you. There is plenty of free parking on the street. There is no wheelchair access but we will assist guests if they need help with carrying luggage from their car or assistance with walking 6 steps up to our front door. Elderly people have stayed but the driveway is very steep and we can help you walk down this.

You can arrive until midnight (and later if prearranged) and the main room is beside the front door, so access is easy. You can breakfast in your room, on the deck, in the kitchen/lounge or in the garden. No strict departure time unless we have other guests arriving but arrange this with us when you arrive.
We have 3000m2 section (mostly steep/swamp with some trees, some bush, some gardens) and the guests are welcome to explore any of this as well having free access to the deck which overlooks this. There are tables and chairs on the deck which is partially covered with a roof. Smoking on the porch or the deck is fine as long as you do not throw cigarette butts into the garden. Free use of the kitchen, fridge and freezer, coffee percolator, gas oven, etc. You can come and go as you please.

We are artists (sonjavank dot c o m) + designers + translators, who have lived in the Netherlands for the past decades and we in the midst of working on the property in between our various assignments. The guest room is comfortable and quiet and features original paintings + prints. We have traveled extensively throughout Europe + Asia and are happy to give advice about where to go in Northland. In particular we can give some insights into our Maori (indigenous) culture as well as historical locations. We generally would leave the guests to do what they want and they can use the kitchen or deck as they wish but we expect that they will be off exploring the Bay of Islands coastline, forests and activities in the area. We do not provide an evening meal unless arranged. Breakfast is an extra charge + must be prearranged.

The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway runs a steam train through the middle of the town of Kawakawa Fridays to Sundays during the summer months 10 km towards Opua. Soon the connection with the coast will be complete, but in the meantime the stories of the history of the area (Maori + colonial) are worth the hour long journey through stunning scenery.
More well known are the toilets made by the famed ecologist and artist, Hundertwasser. This was his last artwork and only architectural wonder in the southern hemisphere. Open for use 24 hours a day. The Kawiti glow worm caves are 10 km south of Kawakawa. The historic Ruapekapeka pa (with forest walks) is 20 km south of Kawakawa. Bicycles can be hired in Opua and Paihia for the cycle ways along the coast.
It is a quiet relaxed town, lovely for a stroll and the spirit of the place is something unique.

There is public transport to Kerikeri (30 min north) + Paihia and there two bus stops from Auckland either 5 min (with about 30 steep steps) or 2 minutes up the road, from our driveway.

Accès des voyageurs
You can check in and out when you please if bookings allow for this. The default is from 5pm and departure is 10 a.m. The bathroom (with toilet and shower) and kitchen, living room and the deck which overlooks the 3000m2 property we are working on turning into something interesting. You are welcome to the garden and grounds but we assume that you would spend your time at the town attractions (the steam train, the Hunterwasser toilets, the Kawiti caves, the Ruapekapeka historic Maori pa, Ngapuhi hot springs), the bays of islands coast, the nearby forests or historic sites.
