COVID-19 CLEANLINESS. As you may know, Switzerland has managed the Covid-19 crisis well and things are nearly back to normal with modified social distancing in place. We are so happy to be able to welcome guests again. We will continue to clean to our usual high standards, taking extra care to disinfect and to provide disinfectant and materials for our guests.

ALL ARE WELCOME HERE! In this time of tensions on many fronts, we'd like to emphasize that we welcome people from all walks of life in all ways. We have only ever had positive experiences with guests for some seven years as Airbnb hosts and we fully anticipate that this will continue. We look forward to welcoming you.

We ask that you keep in mind that guests stay in the guest room in the middle of our apartment where we live. It is our home and we request that this be respected.

PARKING ON STREET: free from 7 p.m - 8 a.m., and costs during the day CHF 2 for 2 hours. Underground parking garage nearby also has parking. All-day parking near the cable car is cheaper.

The cable car is 10 minutes away (by foot) or a 3-minute ride with the free Ski Bus in season (hasliberg dot ch) for pictures and information. It's a great resort for free-riding as well as for beginners. There are winter hiking and sledding paths and snowshoeing is beautiful.
There are literally countless hikes once the snow has melted. We love to suggest possible routes once you’re here and we can discuss your experience, conditioning, and wishes.

In a 100+-year-old former hotel, we have a lovely 5-room apartment with long corridors, high ceilings, many tall windows, and 2 full baths, one with a bathtub and one with a shower. The kitchen and both baths as well as the double-paned windows are no more than 7 years old. Our guests have a large bedroom with double bed and a comfy mattress, a closet for clothes, as well as the use of the bathroom with shower. We do not use this bathroom except to shower and we'd coordinate that with your needs. You are free to use the kitchen (we can coordinate cooking times) and of course the living room.
We provide breakfast for you and show you where things are in the kitchen (Included in the price)
Note that the apartment is on the 2nd floor (European) or 3rd floor (as in the U.S.) with NO ELEVATOR (lift) so one has to walk up many stairs. Very authentic older European.

Our work schedules are quite irregular, and cannot commit to being full-time hosts who show you all around.
We are a happily married American couple, age 60+, with two grown sons. We have traveled a fair amount ourselves and worked for many years in a multicultural setting, so we love to meet people from different cultures. While we might not always have time to do things with you, we can provide tips for travel in Switzerland and especially for hikes and skiing in this region. There are endless possibilities for hiking and climbing for all levels. We both speak German and English and KC speaks French as well.

The apartment is in the very center of lovely Meiringen, a village of 5,000 people between Interlaken (35 minutes by train) and Lucerne (75 minutes by train). It has all amenities you really need. The train station is a 5 mins. walk from our house. Public transportation is excellent. There are many restaurants in town and in the area, 2 grocery stores, hardware stores, florists, gift shops, an outdoor and indoor pool, climbing gym and tennis, and many tourist attractions primarily geared to the outdoors. There is easy access to the lovely hiking/ski area Hasliberg as well as to other hiking/ski areas in the region. Sherlock Holmes fans love to come here because "The Final Problem" took place here. There is a tiny Sherlock Holmes museum and a special hike to commemorate this.
The region is well known for paragliding, sport climbing, its gorges and five exquisite alpine valleys with attending passes. The Aare gorge is right in town and the even more dramatic Rosenlaui gorge is a hike/bus/car ride from here in our favorite alpine valley, Rosenlaui, as well as a gateway to the Susten, Grimsel and Joch passes, Trift glacier hanging bridge, the steepest funicular to Gelmer Lake, and much more.

There are trains to Interlaken twice an hour at 0.22 and 0.51 after the hour. The trip takes about 35 minutes and costs Sfr 25.20 round-trip for a full-price ticket. Interlaken is heavily touristed largely due to the train to the Top of Europe (about Sfr 190 per person.)

There are trains to Lucerne once an hour at 0.42 past the hour. This trip takes 72 minutes and costs about Sfr 30 round-trip at full-price. Lucerne is on a beautiful large lake and has a lovely old town and is for many visitors their favorite city in Switzerland.

Go to (sbb dot ch) for public transportation schedules and planning. ((URL HIDDEN) is also very comprehensive and informative.

For Holmes fans this is a must stop as "The Final Problem" took place here. The Englischerhof in the story is our Hotel Sauvage and there is a special train up to the falls where Holmes and Moriarty battled to their apparent death.

The local Swiss Tourist Office requires us to charge a tax that is used to pay for the tourist infrastructure of the region. It is 2 francs per adult per night (1 franc for kids under 16). For your ease, we have now included this in the price you pay. You will receive the Tourist Card, which allows you free access to the swimming pool and a few other places, as well as reductions on some local attractions, so the tax could more than pay for itself.

Please note that we do have a friendly dog who lives indoors. She is rather loudly enthusiastic when she first meets guests and then settles down to enjoy some petting. If you are afraid of or allergic to dogs, ours is probably not the best place for you. We cannot put her outside as we do not have a garden and we do not want to lock her in a room for a few days.

Où se situe le logement

Meiringen, Canton de Berne, Suisse

In the heart of the Swiss Alps with a view of some glaciers out our windows. All necessary amenities are within easy walking distance and the village is centrally located between the lovely cites of Interlaken and Lucerne, making it an excellent location for numerous day trips and hikes or winter activities.

KATHLEEN and KC: We are both from the United States and have lived in Switzerland for nearly 30 years now. We have been very happily married for 38 years and have two grown sons and an 12-year-old dog named Phoebe. We both love hiking, snowshoeing and skiing, chocolate, and ice cream (although KC does not eat sugar). KC is stronger in the athletic areas and I have to eat chocolate and ice cream enough for two people. If we can have all 5 in one day, we celebrate with an extra scoop. For 18 years we worked as teachers, dorm heads, as well as co-directors of a wonderful international boarding school here in the Swiss Alps. We are now both parent and teacher educators of the Positive Discipline approach, giving talks, workshops, and classes in Switzerland and the U.S. We are long-time ovo-lacto vegetarians and students of Thich Nhat Hanh. KATHLEEN: I am a social worker and currently work as a parent educator and coach in private practice as well as a Somatic Experiencing Practioner (an approach to healing trauma). I worked for 9 years in the US as a psychotherapist and then 18 years in Switzerland in a unique international boarding school in many different roles. In addition to what's listed above, I love coffee, yoga, being with family and friends, meditating, knitting, reading, NYT crossword puzzles, films (not action or horror). We were big Obama fans back in the day and now just dream of peace and understanding for all peoples throughout the world in whatever peaceful form it may take. KC: I love back-country skiing, swimming in alpine lakes and rivers, reading stories aloud, playing games like chess, bridge, sudoku and free cell, frisbee with our dog, tennis, and traveling.

We love to interact with our guests if we are around. We love meeting people from different cultures and hearing about their country, family, work but sometimes we are working and hardly see our guests at all.
We have boundless tips and ideas for activities in the area, particularly hiking tips.
