This Grade II Listed Georgian Hall is set in seven acres, with mature and well laid gardens, with plenty of space for relaing in the fresh air.Furnished with the benefit of our antique shop, it has been described as 'quirky' and a 'home away from home'.We also offer Salmon and Trout fishing on a private stretch of the River Esk, during the fishing season. The perfect place for rest and relaxation and only three miles from the bustling seaside town of Whitby.

Le logement
We offer Bed and Breakfast accommodation at Groves Hall. Situated just three miles outside Whitby, North Yorkshire, in the beautiful and peaceful Esk Valley, Groves Hall has a commanding view over the surrounding countryside. We are lucky enough to be on the route of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, and in the summer, steam trains go past four times a day.
It is a Grade II listed Georgian stone built property set in seven acres, with mature gardens featuring specimen trees and plants. There is also 300 metres of river frontage on the Esk, from where it is possible to fish during the season for salmon and trout if you purchase a day permit from us, and have a fishing license.
The local area is wonderful for walking, cycling, fishing, painting, horse riding, bird watching, relaxing etc, with the bonus of being seven minutes drive from the bustling town of Whitby, which is full of shops, restaurants, pubs, Whitby Abbey etc...
The accommodation is the East Wing of our house, which has its own entrance. There is a large newly decorated twin room overlooking the garden, with two vintage European single beds, a fabulous en suite Art Deco bathroom and a separate private area to have breakfast, when the weather is not good enough to take breakfast outside on the terrace, overlooking the gardens. We have added a separate living room for you on the ground floor, with open log fire, a cozy sofa and armchair, coffee table etc, - a great place to read and relax. FreeSat tv in the bedroom, Free Wi-Fi. Parking is on the forecourt, for cars and we have secure storage for bicycles.
The bus service to and from Whitby is twice an hour, plus there is also the railway, which runs from Whitby to Middlesbrough, through the beautiful Esk Valley.
We are a non-smoking household , and do not take pets, but we do have five very friendly cats. As well as a Full English breakfast, which is locally sourced, we can offer a delicious Vegetarian breakfast, and with prior notice, we can cater for most dietary requirements.
This is an ideal spot to unwind, as it is so peaceful, with very little passing traffic, and glorious views.

Accès des voyageurs

We are on a private road, which means that there is very little passing traffic, and no noise, besides horse riders, cyclists, and dog walkers, it is a safe area, and our neighbours take pride in their gardens and it has a magical feel to the place. There are many bridle paths near us, which will take you on interesting walks, with stunning views.

We moved to Whitby twenty seven years ago from London, as we were looking for the "Better life"..and found it! We opened The Stonehouse Emporium in Whitby, sixteen years ago, selling everything from Georgian fireplaces, grand pianos, Art Deco lighting and mirrors, to vintage clothing and accessories, and a huge range of vintage magazines, from the 1920s - 1980s.We sold this proprty in May 2017, and now run the business from the website. Our guests receive 10% discount when they shop with us. Whitby has been a fabulous place for our daughter to grow up, and she moved to London to study sculpture at Art School, just like I did when I was her age..small world! She completed her Masters Degree in Ceramics at the Royal College of Art, and is making a name for herself in the Art World! We treat people as we like to be treated when we are travelling,-well and with as much local knowledge as possible. We can book restaurants, pamper sessions, arrange mechanics for car problems, visits to local sites of interest..anything to make your stay with us memorable. My background is in fashion/interior design, and my partner is a musician/photographer, so we have a wide range of interests, and are quite imaginative when it comes to making suggestions for great days out. We have made good friends with people who have come to stay with us, and some of our guests feel that they have a "home away from home" in Whitby, - they arrive as guests and leave as friends. It wasn’t until one of our prospective guests asked if we provided soap in our bnb, that I realised that what we do and how we do it, is a complete mystery, if you haven’t stayed with us before. Charles and I are very experienced world travellers and have had enough bad breakfasts at so called 5-Star hotels to know how to do it properly! For our Full English Breakfast we use bacon and sausages from Jacksons of Ruswarp ( a fabulous local butcher about five minutes away) local free range eggs, real Heinz baked beans, good quality chestnut mushrooms, lovely tomatoes etc The jams and marmalades are top quality, and we only use English butter. For people with a lesser appetite, we offer porridge, Fruits of the Forest compote and Greek yoghurt, croissants, and any combination of the Full English with scrambled eggs. The cereals are all proper brands, not just sawdust in the bottom of the box! We cater for vegetarians, and vegans, and if you have special dietary requirements, we can generally offer something to fit the bill. We ran a successful Creperie in Whitby for six years, and if booked ahead, I can offer crepes for breakfast with assorted fillings. That’s the food covered. Our rental accommodation is the West wing of the house, which is separate from our accommodation. There is a mezzanine area overlooking Woodlands for having breakfast, which also has a kettle and tea making facilities for use over night. The large bedroom has two vintage European sized single beds, with custom made mattresses, that are soooo comfortable. The bedroom overlooks the garden, and there is a huge bookcase with a selection of really interesting literature. We also offer a private sitting room with open log fire and comfy sofas. Plenty of space to chill out and read, or make use of our super fast Wifi, if you need to do some work. When the weather permits, I serve breakfast in the garden, on the terrace, where you can watch the steam train go by, Herons flying down the river and ducks and pheasants feeding on the lawn . Our tv has Free Sat and there is free WiFi, if you need to be in touch with the outside world. Charles recreated an Art Deco bathroom, which has original Royal Doulton fittings, similar to those in Wentworth House and a properly sized bath, with shower over. Yes we supply soap, good quality shampoo and conditioner, bubble bath etc, and the towels are nice and fluffy. Our guests can walk in the garden, or down by the river, play Badminton on the lawn, play with the cats (of which there are five)and just relax as we have a fantastic view over the beautiful Esk Valley. We have contacts in all the local bars and restaurants, and can make suggestions and arrange bookings for you. We treat our guest how we would like to be treated, and we find that personal recommendation is the best form of advertising.
