We love living close to downtown in a diverse neighborhood of old houses, but depending on what you're used to, you may or may not be comfortable on a block that includes occasional neighborhood noise, a few run-down houses and a few interesting characters! Read on for more details about our neighborhood.

The guest house is located on a diverse working-class block of simple old houses and all types of people. The neighborhood is multi-racial, multi-cultural, and multi-generational. Our old and quirky neighborhood is a stone's throw from Memorial Hospital and a fire station. Therefore, be advised that the sound of ambulances/fire trucks is common. Our block is quiet most of the time, but there is occasional noise from the neighborhood and it's possible you will hear the one or two occasionally-loud neighbors on the block. As long-time urban dwellers, we do not notice these sounds, but if you are not used to them, you might. There are fans at the house to provide white noise if needed.

In terms of safety, we have lived on this block for over 35 years (many of them as a single woman) and have had very few problems. As for walking at night, we ourselves feel comfortable doing so as we know the neighborhood well, but others might not be depending on individual comfort levels. The walking route from the Airbnb to downtown is getting better and better as our city has recently added pedestrian-friendly lighting to the streets. If you would like to walk downtown, we'd be happy to suggest the ideal walking route.

Like many neighborhoods near the urban center, our neighborhood experienced decay during the "urban flight" years as people moved to the suburbs, and it definitely suffered during the most recent economic crisis. But thanks to good neighbors, the city, and our neighborhood association, things are on the upswing, and we are happy to be a part of our neighborhood's revitalization.

Lots of improvements have occurred in the past couple of years. For example, we ourselves have renovated two houses on the block, the city has torn down an abandoned house, and another neighbor has turned a vacant lot into a lovely flower garden and even installed a "Little Free Library" there. The neighborhood association and historic landmark preservation group have restored two houses, and Habitat for Humanity built a lovely new home on a formerly abandoned lot. All three of these wonderful projects are just kitty-corner from the guest house. Just across Portage/William Street you will find the Chapin Park Historic District, which has beautiful colorful historic homes on brick streets, and makes for a lovely stroll.

My husband Eric and I enjoy staying in AirBnbs when we travel. We like AirBnb because we feel we have deeper and richer travel experiences by staying in local neighborhoods rather than in hotels. We look for Airbnbs that are eclectic, funky, colorful, homey, and comfortable. As Airbnb hosts, we also try to provide these features in our own Airbnb apartments and private rooms. We are both entrepreneurial types. Eric has a small business in downtown South Bend, and I take care of our Airbnb spaces. We are also renovating a couple of houses on our block and are happy to be a part of improving our neighborhood. We enjoy living adjacent to downtown, but also appreciate nature, bird-watching and solitude. We are environmentally conscious about what we eat, where we shop, how we live and how we work. We enjoy ballroom dancing, folk dancing, playing musical instruments, running, exercising at the neighborhood gym, and practicing yoga.
