“Great burgers and beer in a hip, lively spot in NW. Love the wood carvings depicting Pacific NW scenes. Gluten-free individuals can even get gluten-free beer and hamburger buns there. One of our favorite places for a casual meal. Be prepared to wait, though!”

“The Pearl District is Portland’s more upscale downtown with food, bars, breweries, and shops. This is where you will find Powell’s Books on 10th and Burnside. From there head up the alphabet in street names and stay working 10th to 14th to see the Pearl area.”

“All the places I've recommended in this section are within walking or biking distance of the John Barleycorn Home. When guests arrive, they get a guide to all the cool places in the neighborhood and across the city. The Teardrop is my favorite cocktail bar, one of the first and still mixing lovely stuff. (The Rookery, the Bit House, the Bible Club aren't far behind) Just wanted to plug the complimentary JB Guides.”
