Parc
“Sofia’s most famous park was landscaped in the 1880s right after the Bulgarian Revival, making it the oldest one in the city. It was developed over the next 50 years by three different designers: the Swiss Daniel Neff, the Alsatian Joseph Frei and then the Bulgarian Georgi Dutev (when the park’s Soviet monuments were installed). But what’s impressive is that all the landscapers worked within the original plan, and the upshot is a pleasing sense of coherence for such a big project. It all makes for a refreshing afternoon amble, and if you’re here on a summer evening there are free concerts to catch.”

“The National Art Gallery is situated in the former royal palace of Bulgaria. In the halls where once ministers and royalties took decisions, today you can make a historic run through the artworks of Bulgaria’s most prominent artists. Be sure to not miss the bright winter garden, dedicated to temporary photographic exhibitions. Behind the gallery/palace is a small and quiet park.”

“National palace of culture was opened in 1981 in celebration of Bulgaria’s 1300th anniversary. Its halls are well designed and equipped with comfortable seats. Many world famous singers, musicians and dancers have performed here over the years The National Palace of Culture was initiated by a suggestion of Lyudmila Zhivkova, daughter of the communist leader of the former People’s Republic of Bulgaria Todor Zhivkov). “Located in a house, a cultural monument of the city, One More is one of Sofia’s most beloved and visited bars. In spring and summer the garden awaits you with refreshing plant life and light cocktails. In the cold months the stylish interior, mix of history and adventurous contemporary design, provides various hot drinks and fine tunes. Also: the taste and quality of the appetizers and sandwiches here would make most restaurants envious.”

History Museum
“The history of Sofia is presented on two floors of the magnificent former Turkish Mineral Baths, just behind the mosque. Exhibitions are divided thematically over eight chambers, with the most interesting rooms dedicated to the Bulgarian royal families of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the findings of recent archeological digs around town. There are plenty of signs in English.”

Église
“The Russian church was built in 1914 is dedicated to the patron-saint of the Russian Tsar at the time Nicholas II. The Russian church was built on the site of a Mosque, which was destroyed in 1882, after the liberation of Bulgaria by Russia from the Ottoman Empire. The Russian church was built as the official church of the Russian Embassy, which was located next door, and of the Russian community in Sofia, and was named, as was the tradition for diplomatic churches, for the patron saint of the Emperor who ruled Russia at the time, Nicholas II of Russia. The five domes are coated with gold. The bells were donated by Emperor Nicholas II.”

“Step back in time at Raketa, a restaurant that teasingly harkens back to the era of socialism in Bulgaria with its Communist memorabilia and other retro decor. You'll want to explore the extensive selection of rakia, a traditional Balkan spirit similar to brandy. Take recommendations from your server if you feel overwhelmed, and perhaps stumble over to Sputnik next door afterwards to continue the night with some offbeat, unique cocktails. Reservations recommended.”

“Literally the restaurant is hosted by a beautiful, 140 years old, blue house. For me, every time I walk into their garden or enter in one of their rooms is like going inside a fairy-tale - a promise of mysterious story or a hidden secret. As if Tim Burton was hired to do the interior, almost animated, but at the same time arty and retro. I can't explain the food there, except for one word - tasty! It is a mixture of what you think you know, but find out you had no idea. The menu is short and seasonal and totally affordable. It has just a pinch of the pretentiousness of a fancy restaurant sprinkled over wholesome meals and full plates. Do not miss!”

“The Little Things actually spreads itself across two floors and a shared yard of an old house. As promised, here you’ll find plenty of details, antiques, old books and furniture. Thankfully, the same principles are applied to the varied and tasty menu. The food bares homely and provencal feel with a careful balance between vegetarian and meat recipes.”

“A popular restaurant in the heart of the city with great food, good service and quirky interior. I would recommend you sit inside, since the outside is a smoking area and it often gets too noisy and busy. They offer some typical Bulgarian options and have vegan and gluten free options as well. ”
