Wonder Valley Food Scene

Some of my favorite restaurants in the area. Most all restaurants are open for indoor dining and many have outdoor dining as well as take out options available. Make sure to call ahead, make reservations if possible or check online to be sure they are open. There is a slower pace here in the hi dez, so the same goes for restaurants...prepare for a wait (especially during the tourist season) at all establishments.
I describe the Palms as part David Lynch, part StarWars bar. It's one of my favorite places on earth. Warm, comfortable, homey, good food, good people. Wonder Valley Local Flavor. Open on Weekends only. Open mic on Friday evenings and other music events are happening on select weekends. The Sibleys are the house band and beloved local family that own the place. Brunch is back on Sundays 9 - noon! Great food & drinks & vegan options. Check their FB page for current or future events. Don’t miss the opportunity to see Jack Pierson’s END OF THE WORLD art installation behind the Palms (a short walk just south east of The Palms parking lot.)

A must! Casual fine dining, an early evening of appetizers with friends, a special night out. Open Weds - Sun 3pm- 8pm. CLOSED MONDAYS & TUESDAYS. They take reservations same day reservations. Call after 2pm for reservations. Closed Mondays & Tuesdays. Visit their website for Menus. Great bar, music every night, local flavor, historic and sacred site to the indigenous peoples here. Sitting outside on a warm desert evening with a beverage, listening to live music...the cozy ambiance here is unbeatable. I love their mushroom appetizer with the homemade sourdough bread. Yum. Take a stroll across the lawn to visit the beautiful & magical Oasis of Mara and a walk through the Fault Line Farm, the garden where they grow their own vegetables and herbs that end up on your plate.

Don’t hike this during the summer. Recommend Winter, Spring and Fall. Moderate to strenuous with no shade. Bring extra water & a snack to enjoy at the oasis. Should be in decent shape for this hike. 2 hr +

The 29 Palms Art Gallery is a landmark in the City of Twentynine Palms providing exhibitions, art receptions, seasonal events, Monday morning paint-outs, and art classes for all ages that are offered to desert locals, visitors and snowbirds. The 29 Palms Art Gallery opened in 1963 in a historic adobe built in 1936 by the Stubbs brothers for western author Tom Hopkins. Mixture for the original adobe bricks was brought from Mesquite Dry Lake, fill dirt was made up of gold tailings from the Gold Crown Mine, and plaster for the walls came from the Anaconda Mine. Some of the support beams were railroad ties used during construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913. The spikes in these ties can still be seen in the lintels over the doors and windows. https://29palmsartgallery.com/

The Serrano and Chemeheuvi tribes lived here and in the surrounding hills. They named this place “Mar-rah”, meaning “land of little water”. This is the heart of 29 Palms. Located on the grounds of the 29 Palms Inn. Take a tour to learn the incredible history early on Saturday mornings led by a beloved local naturalist. Call their office to reserve a spot.

Not to be missed. Noah Purifoy Desert Art Museum is several acres of open land displaying Purifoy’s assemblage sculptures, all created on-site between 1989 and 2004. Visitors must take dirt roads to access the site, where they’ll be greeted with a hand-painted “Blair Lane” street sign and dozens of large-scale sculptures made from materials such as castoff metals, burnt wood, and blown-out rubber tires. A brochure is available at the entrance naming the various sculptures and the years in which they were built. http://www.noahpurifoy.com/
