Like Cafe Rio, this place makes your salads, burritos, and/or tacos right in front of you as you walk down the line. Unlike Cafe Rio, Costa Vida has half-salads, which makes for a more manageable meal, if you don't want leftovers.

Not exactly in town, nor even next to it, this gourmet grilled cheese place is worth the 15-minute drive. These grilled cheese sandwiches are the perfect combination of light and crispy, melty and meaty. I truly do crave this place.

Hawaii holds a piece of my heart. I lived there for a semester of college and have taken several trips there with my husband and family, too. Whenever I get a longing to go back that can't be fulfilled by jumping on a plane, I go to Mo' Bettahs. The food is authentically and deliciously Hawaiian, and the atmosphere is as close as you can get to an island-feel in land-locked Utah. It takes about fifteen minutes to drive to the Thanksgiving Point area from the apartment, but if you're craving Hawaii, too, that's much more doable than a six-hour plane ride.

The hike to the cave is a bit stiff but well worth the strain. Make reservations ahead of time.

One of the most beautiful college campuses you'll find. Also, the fudge, mint brownies, and ice cream are amazing. It takes about 35-45 minutes to drive there from the apartment. While in Provo, check out the local food and music scene.

I worked as a volunteer at this park one summer with my kids. We dressed in period clothing and I taught visitors how to card wool. Perhaps I'm biased, then, when I say that this place is a don't-miss, especially if you're interested in the fascinating history of Utah or life in the 19th century. Old homes have been moved here from all over the state, so that you can can stand in a one-room home where a large family lived and tour the "mansion" that Brigham Young built. There's a variety of hands-on activities for kids to do and adults will enjoy seeing some of the old trades being worked before their eyes. Eat some Brigham's Donuts while you're there and try some lemon or horehound drops from the general store. Card some wool, too. It's not that hard.

Sleep in a bit and avoid rush hour.
Saratoga Springs is a bedroom community with lots of commuters, and so the roads tend to be busy during rush hour. After nine, the traffic lightens up and getting around the city is easy.

The sunrises over Utah Lake can be spectacular. Just step out onto the sidewalk to see what I mean or drive down to the lake and see if you can spot pelicans and other waterfowl basking in the dawn's early light.
Coutumes et culture
We don't drink, but we do . . . eat cookies
If you're new to Utah, you'll soon realize there aren't many drinking establishments. If you're looking for bars, you can find them, but not in Saratoga Springs. You will, however, find gourmet soda shops that also sell cookies as big as your hand (search for Swig, Sodalicious or Fiiz on your GPS). And if cookies as big as your hand are your thing, you can find shops that sell only those, such as Chip, Crumbl and Smart Cookie. There is a Crumbl in Saratoga Springs, a Chip and a Smart Cookie in American Fork. You can't go wrong with any of them. I know, because I do eat cookies.

Take a Hike
Download the Alltrails app and spend some of your time in Utah exploring one or more of the many trails you can find on it. Some of our favorites in this area are Gloria Falls, Horsetail Falls, First Falls, Stewart Falls and Bells Canyon. We also enjoyed a recent walk around Silverlake, near Brighton, a mellow, nature hike that young children can easily manage. The options are nearly endless and alltrails can help you find one with the length and degree of difficulty that you desire.
