Bezienswaardigheden

The Westduinpark between Scheveningen and Kijkduin is one of the largest nature reserves in The Hague. The protected dune park located on the Zuiderstrand has a very varied landscape with dense forest and open plains, moist dune valleys and high dune tops, bunker remains from World War II and Scottish highlanders that roam freely. Thanks to the many walking, cycling and riding trails, the Westduinpark is an ideal nature reserve to get a breath of fresh air by the sea. To keep the dune landscape open and varied, a herd of Scottish highlanders has been released in the Westduinpark. The hairy cattle run free, so you can find them everywhere in the nature reserve. You often see them eating from the rose hips or the wrinkled roses along the bicycle and pedestrian paths. The Scottish highlanders are easily approachable, but it is recommended to keep a distance of at least 25 meters, especially if there are young calves in the herd. There are various cycling and walking paths in the Westduinpark. Cyclists can follow the long-distance path LF1 between Scheveningen and Kijkduin, which runs straight through the dune landscape. Hikers can use the long-distance walking path 5, the Dutch Coastal Path, the route of which also runs between Scheveningen and Kijkduin. In addition, there are numerous small paths for hikers through dune valleys and dune tops. From the latter you have a beautiful view of the city and the sea.

From the Westduinpark you can walk straight onto the expansive Zuiderstrand. The Zuiderstrand is also known as the quiet beach among residents of The Hague. And rightfully so. It is the quiet - 'secret' alternative between Scheveningen and Kijkduin, directly behind the dunes, for anyone who loves the beach and the sea. In summer, the Zuiderstrand is the perfect place to relax at one of the authentic beach pavilions.

The Bosjes van Poot are named after the gamekeeper Willem Poot (1857-1932). These bushes consist of a dune-rich area, planted with pine and oak trees. So even if it is a bit rainy and wet, you can enjoy walking here. Dogs are allowed to run free everywhere in the Bosjes van Poot.

Scheveningen Harbor is within walking distance from the apartment, where various (fish) restaurants can be found. The harbor of Scheveningen is bursting with activity. On Sunday the cutters sail out to catch the best fish at sea for a week. On Friday they return and the fisher women and their offspring wait on the quay to welcome the men. Then the busy activities of loading and unloading and auctioning the fish start. The view of the activity, from cutter to powerboat, is always worthwhile. Scheveningen harbor is not only the center for the fish trade, but also the place where numerous restaurants and eateries are located. The view of the marina, the activity of the fish auction and the fresh sea air make for a unique place in the Netherlands to eat out. The various fish restaurants on the harbor take the fish fresher than fresh straight from the sea. Simonis is well known on the Visafslagweg, where young and old can enjoy different types of fish. In the first harbor, professional fishing is central, such as the shipping companies and the fish auction. The office of the Port Authority and the Traffic Control Center are also located here. In addition, there is room for offshore ships, large commercial vessels, the towing service and the Royal Dutch Rescue Company. The second port is for recreation. In addition to the marina, it offers space for charter vessels, small professional fishing and sport fishing. You will find many catering establishments on the quays, giving the area its distinctive atmosphere. The third port offers space for special ships, such as those of Rijkswaterstaat. This port is partly being developed into a sea sailing port. There are also options for commercial shipping.
