City/town information

Port Angeles, in northwestern Washington, U.S. is on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, linked by ferry to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, 18 miles (29 km) north across the Strait. Located at the base of Ediz Hook (a 3.5-mile- [5.6-km-] long, curving sand bar), the site was visited in 1791 by the Spanish explorer Francisco Eliza, who named the harbor Puerto de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles. Permanently settled in 1862, it has a sheltered harbor where you will often see large vessels anchored. Port Angeles is the headquarters for nearby Olympic National Park. It is home to Peninsula College (1961) and a U.S. Coast Guard station, the oldest in the United States. Port Angeles offers a welcoming community and incredible views of both the water and mountains from anywhere in town.

For a town on the water, Port Angeles does not offer restaurants that specialize in fish. Kokopelli's does the best job at seafood. Their prickly pear salad dressing is great too! I prefer to sit upstairs for a nicer ambiance or view outside. However, if they put you in the bar it can be a little loud.

Sightseeing

A must-see if you are visiting Port Angeles and Olympic National Park. Definitely worth the time and money, unless it is totally fogged in or living up to its name with strong snowy winds.

Lake Crescent is a gorgeous lake a half-hour or so drive from Laurel Haven. There are several viewpoints along the road. There are trails on both sides of the lake. However, at this point, the road on the back side has been closed for several reasons. Definitely stop at Lake Crescent Lodge (only open May- September with Covid) and take the hike to Marymere Falls.

Great 3-mile round trip hike on an easy, wide, well-maintained trail (except for the steep climb at the end, up steps, to the falls). You will walk through old-growth rainforest that is a good alternative to the Hoh Rainforest if you are short on time. You can also access the Storm King Trail from this trail. Storm King is not for the faint of heart, and a little treacherous near the top, but the view of the Lake from the top is spectacular.

Beautiful park on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, about a half-hour drive from Laurel Haven. Overnight camping and day use. Great play toys and field for the family. Also, several trails access the beaches below when the tide is out. Great place to see the life in tide pools. Also possible to see seals or whales if you are lucky. There are also remains of WWll Bunkers to see.

A short drive from town out onto a spit of land in the Harbor that leads to our Coast Guard Base. There are place to stop and walk or picnic along the way with beautiful views looking back at the city and the Olympic Mountains. You can often spot harbor seals swimming too and an occasional river otter or Orca whale.
