Asheville, NC is only a gorgeous 45 minutes south of here on a stunning mountain drive and has a ton to do, including the Biltmore Estate, a great food scene, and more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the USA. https://www.exploreasheville.com/.

About 30 minutes north on I-26 and has a ton to do including great restaurants, shopping, and the Gray Fossil Museum sporting extinct giant sloths, saber tooth cats and rhino skeletons that were found onsite about 20 years ago. There is Rocky Mount State Historic Site, and Tipton Haynes. http://visitjohnsoncitytn.com/

Parks & Nature
Gorgeous! A beautiful creek side road with moss covered boulders, waterfalls and trout-filled mountain pools leads to the main parking area. The well maintained dog-friendly trail has more of the same, with trails that go up to mountain top views (which are especially good in the winter when the leaves are down). Also this is one of the few places in the world where synchronized fireflies abound in late May and early June--but make sure to sign up for the Ranger hikes to get a glimpse! There is also a back entrance on Lower Higgins Creek Rd. that is a more difficult hike but leads to some amazing waterfalls and a small mountain "lake."
