This Ferris Wheel has also something about it that makes it the only one in California 4. What famous road route ends at Santa Monica Pier? 5. What structure on the pier was name as the first Santa Monica landmark? Answers 1. The Pier is 112 years old. It was completed 9th September 1909 after sixteen months of construction. Thousands of people swarmed onto the 1,600 ft long concrete pierto enjoy a festive day of band concerts & swimming races. 2. “Pacific Wheel” Ferris wheel is the first solar-powered wheel in the world 3. “Pacific Wheel’ ferris wheel is the only over-water ferris wheel in California! 4. Santa Monica Pier marks the end of the famous Route 66 – Route 66 was created in 1926 as a link between Chicago and Los Angeles. After much speculation and debate over the official end of the road in Santa Monica, in 2009 the Route 66 Alliance named Santa Monica Pier as the proud owner of the title! 5. The Looff Hippodrome Carousel on the Pier was Santa Monica’s first National Historic Landmark – the carousel built in 1922 was where Paul Newman famously worked in The Sting.
