Sightseeing

Lovely castle and grounds, close to our home. Walk or drive, it's easy to reach. King Henry VIII built the castle and the grounds were developed by the Duke of Wellington's niece, Lady Hester Stanhope. They're lovely grounds, and if you want to see the original Wellington boots, they're displayed in a cabinet!

Another castle built by Henry VIII. This one doesn't have grounds and is more military in style. it's located right by the sea in Deal. Kids like it, they can run around the dungeons and look out to sea from the battlements.

You can walk to the lighthouse from Walmer, across the cliffs if you are keen on walking. It's about 5 or 6 miles with fabulous views over the English Channel.

Deal seafront is charming and the pier gives you a lovely view back to the seafront. There's a cafe there too. if you like a traditional seaside cafe, try Deal Beach Parlour opposite the pier.

The old Georgian part of the town between the High Street and seafront is lovely. Lots of smuggling history, look out for guided walks by The History Project.

Outdoors

Interesting park created on the old slag heap from Betteshanger coal mine. Great for cycling and walking. The café has a good reputation and the mining museum is fascinating. Walk, cycle or drive to get there.

Beautiful views across the channel to France. You can walk from here if you're a keen walker, or drive and then walk. National Trust has a cafe at Langdon Cliff, £5 parking if you're not a member, but worth it.
