This pub is approximately a 15min drive away, but it is the loveliest, proper Yorkshire country pub around. Serving a wide range of pub classics, it’s a great place to go after a walk or to enjoy a pint. There is a fantastic circular walk starting in Cowesby (the next door village), which takes you up to the moors and through a beautiful Rhododendron tunnel back into Cowesby – we would recommend doing then and then heading to the Dog & Gun after. You do need to book though – they are very popular.

Sightseeing

If you decide to wander through town, do find the time to pop into St. Mary’s Church – the one right in front of you when you open the front door. This beautiful church dates to the 15th century and houses some wonderful stained glass windows. The church wardens often arrange exhibitions and displays to enjoy whilst you are there and keep an eye out for mice by the famous mouse-man Robert Thompson!

Thirsk Museum is located a little further into town – in the building where Thomas Lord (who founded Lord’s Cricket Ground) was born. It is well worth a look inside to learn more about Thirsk and the surrounding area.
