Mt. Tom State park is a scenic 40 minute drive up into Litchfield county. It features a public sandy beach on a clear freshwater lake, great for swimming, and a nice grassy, shady picnic area. It's also one of our favorite spots for launching kayaks or paddle boards, since there are no power boats allowed. This means conditions are calm and perfect for paddling. This is a spring fed lake, so the water is very clear and clean. Many swimmers go outside the designated swim area to take a longer swim and train for triathlons. There are basic facilities. For hikers, there are some moderate trails through the woods and up rocky steps to an old stone tower and an overlook with views of the surrounding hills. Summer weekends can be busy, so get there early, or try for a weekday or off season. While in the area, check out West Shore Seafood in Morris, CT for seasonal outdoor dining!

Lillinonah Woods is a small lake-side park, just a mile down our road. There's a parking area at the corner of Obtuse Rocks Rd and Rt 133. The wooded, wide gravel trail takes you down to a picnic area with a few tables and a view of the state boat launch and bridge to Bridgewater. Since this is a public park, you may find groups, families, fisherman, and boaters. Note that there is no swimming allowed here and that the docks to the right are for the Lake Authority Police boats and not for public use. Also, remember your walk back to the car will be uphill about a ½ mile.

121 Restaurant and Bar is tucked away in the Oxford Airport. The drinks, bistro style food and brick oven pizzas are very good, they have a seasonal outdoor patio and they often have live music on the weekends. What's unique about this place is it's right on the runway, so you can watch the small planes and private jets land and take off. Some pilots even come to this destination spot by plane!
