Parks & Nature
Walk the trails at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The Lab is only about 10 minutes from The Nest, and the trails are well-groomed and easy to walk. You can also go to the Visitor Center and look at birds on the pond (mostly geese!), play with sounds in the sound studio, watch short movies in the Bartels Theater, see and explore the “Wall of Birds” mural, and other fun stuff. It’s free. They’re open 10 to 4 daily. As you head to Ithaca, take a left on Sapsucker Woods Road. Their site is: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/visit

Walk trails at the Cornell Botanic Garden and visit the Visitor's Center. There are some trails on campus, and some off campus. Near the visitor center (open 9 to 6 daily) there’s a nice trail up Comstock Knoll. There are also other trails on campus and in the Newman Arboretum, a short distance away from campus. They have a site, http://www.cornellplantations.org/trails, which has some information, but I have to admit, it’s not as helpful as I would like! However, I hope that at the visitor center you could get more information from a real person.

This is our local brewery, about a half-mile down the road from the Nest. Good beer and live music on Fridays during the summer. Try the Bee-have (made from honey) if you light lighter beers, or the Near Varna (if you like IPAs).

Get ice cream at Toad's Too, and then walk down the road behind their store (shown as an unmarked road on the map t the east) to access the Dryden Rail Trail. You can then walk all the way to Dryden Lake along this unpaved (but fairly level) trail. http://dryden.ny.us/board-commission-list/rail-trail-task-force/

About a 1/2 hour walk from the Nest, or a quick trip by car. The restaurant currently operates out of a small food truck, but it's a great place to get a quick espresso/latte/chai or coffee and bagel/pastry. They will be moving in to the neighboring building this fall, and will offer an expanded menu. We stop here often on our way to work, or when heading to downtown Ithaca.

Shopping
Lots of unique, local stores on a newly renovated commons area. Live music in the summer on Thursday nights, and weekend festivals on various weekends throughout the year. Some noteworthy stores: Home Green Home (organic and natural products for the home, books, etc.), Cellar D'Or (wine shop with Friday evening wine tastings), Mockingbird Paperie (fancy notepapers, pens, wrapping paper, other cool stuff!), Sunny Days (a local Ithaca souvenir shop), 15 Steps and Handworks (locally crafted products: clothing, jewelry, art, home goods, notepaper, etc.)
