Food scene
The truly iconic Notre Dame college bar. They serve over-sized, over-poured, cheap drinks to get you where you want to go fast. Smells like beer and your feet stick to the floor, but filled with folks of all ages (I guess it's those who never really left the college bar scene). It can get really crazy on ND home game weekends, so if you want to party like a college kid, you need to stop there. It's also just 4 blocks from the house...

Martin's isn't just a great supermarket. Their prepared foods, like fried chicken, pulled pork, fresh paninis, etc. are a great choice to stock up for tailgating or other events.

A South Bend classic. Family owned and operated since 1951, there is no doubt you're in an authentic Italian restaurant when you're at Rocco's. Nothing fancy. Nothing pretentious. Amazing pizza. Incredible pasta. Served in a homelike environment by people who make you feel like family. For ND football fans, the walls are covered with an amazing collection of memorabilia. Worth visiting just to soak in the history.

Fiddler's is an Irish Public House located in downtown South Bend. The have a lot of live music (almost exclusively Celtic), authentic Irish food and a massive selection of Irish beers and Scotch. It's very cozy and they do a great job of making you feel like you're in an actual Celtic Public House. They also manage to do that while making it family friendly. Not sure you want to keep the kids their until bar closing on a weekend, but they do provide board games, cards and puzzles for fun.

Same owner as Jesus Latin Grill & Tequila Bar and Evil Czech Brewery. I consider it a steak joint more than anything, but they do have salads, chicken and fish that are outstanding as well. They have a unique beer and drink selection including beer from their Micro Brewery Fiddler's is an Irish Public House located in downtown South Bend. It's a Micro Brewery that has a lot of character and is the same owner as the Cordance Tavern and Jesus Latin Grill & Tequila Bar, so the food and experience is outstanding. It's bar food with a unique, kind-of-fancy, twist to it. They also do a Lightning Lunch and Sunday Hangover Brunch where they serve an all-you-can-eat buffet with all of their menu items in small plate format. A great way to try all the unique entrees.

Local ownership and local brewer (owners also have equity in Fiddlers Hearth), their beers are amazing and they serve platters of rich decadent foods like smoked meats (smoked on premise), cheeses, burgers, etc all done in a unique way that matches nothing else in South Bend. If you like IPA's you have to try the Turtle Tamer. They also lean towards being a public house, so about half the seating is at very large tables where they put groups together, so unless you have a very large group, you will probably make some friends by the time you leave. Especially if you have more than a couple of Turtle Tamers!

Their tagline is "HISTORIC, LOCALLY OWNED AND SOPHISTICATED AS HELL". Pretty much sums it up. On the pricey side for South Bend, but they deliver, so you definitely get what you pay for! The food is creative and outstanding quality. The staff is very well trained and friendly. The bar is classy with a great wine, spirits and craft brew selection. If you like upscale, they won't disappoint.

Newly opened in August 2018 by the owner of the Corndance Tavern and Evil Czech brewery (George Pesek). George is a gift to South Bend and Mishawaka because he brings drinking and dining experiences to our area that you would only expect in a much larger city. Jesús Latin Grill & Tequila Bar is Latin cuisine that infuses cultures, flavors and spices from the Caribbean and South America from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Peru, all the way to the Southern tip of Argentina and incorporates American twists for an explosion of your senses. They also have outdoor seating for dining!

Conceptualized by Kurt Janowsky, founder of the Navarre Hospitality Group (Cafe Navarre, Artisan, and more), the Exchange Whiskey Bar is a hidden craft cocktail and whiskey bar with over 300 of the best whiskeys you can find anywhere in the country. Inspired by an atmosphere with a rich history dating back to when this building was one of the last banks John Dillinger himself robbed, this swanky spot is loaded with vintage furniture, wrought iron details, and Victorian style decor. Enjoy a prohibition era-style night out with vintage speakeasy cocktails based on authentic recipes, and the most incredible selection of whiskeys in the area.

You have to check out the latest addition to Downtown South Bend's bar scene, The Hideaway at the LaSalle. Think Cheers, but in a speakeasy; that's The Hideaway vibe. Located on the first floor of The LaSalle Apartments, next to the Morris Performing Arts Center, The Hideaway is an intimate, friendly spot to sip on a craft cocktail or local brew. Stop in and introduce yourself to the staff and be sure to try the creative drinks they're mixing this month! Hungry? The Hideaway serves light bar food, including a gourmet cheese plate, hummus plate, various paninis, and a rotating soup of the day.

Hey, South Bend has a Zoo. Go figure! It's pretty nice too. They also host events that are a blast (and usually sell out almost immediately). Our favorite is Zoo Brew. They fill the zoo with micro brewers and you walk around sampling craft beer all night. Another favorite is Zoo Boo at Halloween. Parents bring their kids in costumes and trick or treat in the zoo.
