Drinks & Nightlife

Take a few flights up to Dalston Roof Park, a bar that hosts some pretty impressive daytime parties and DJ sets. The venue offers the shelter of a covered bar and a roofed area in front of the decks, so you can dance whatever the weather. AstroTurf brightens the place up like a Dalston summer garden.

This seriously hip Japanese-influenced joint is part restaurant, part bar and part music venue. The theme shines through in the menu, which is inspired by Japanese izakayas – pubs serving cooked snacks. They offer an impressive range of sushi, sashimi and tempura (plus select dishes like beef teppanyaki and tuna katsu), alongside zingy salads and sides. Inside it’s low-lit, with regular live jazz (of course: the place is named after a Thelonius Monk album) and DJ sets adding to the atmosphere.

Surrounded by trad mangals and trendy nightspots is this bar where cocktails are king. The seasonally changing menu lists seemingly simple drinks with just a few ingredients, but they're all pretty delicious. What started out as a bit of a sophisticated cocktail joint has morphed into a late-night party spot.

You almost expect smoke in the air and detritus on the floor of this otherwise authentic bodega in Dalston. Furanxo is primarily a wine and charcuterie shop, but at the weekends, opening hours extend so hispanophiles can file in for a glass of something interesting – natural wine from niche Spanish regions. Squeeze into the bar and assert yourself in true Spanish style.

Looking for a smart and cosy setting in which to munch your ocakbasi? This isn’t that setting, but the premium grilled kebab choices more than make up for it, from classic shish to specials like the patlican (aubergine with minced meat, mint, peppers and tomatoes). And while you’re here, grab a belting pide, too.

Hungover in Dalston? This much-loved caff – self styled as a ‘modern greasy spoon’ – will see you right again. There‘s a formidable brunch menu with everything from posh fry-ups to pancakes, plus sarnies and omelettes for lunch, and cocktails for a hair-of-the-dog recovery aid.
