Chick-Fil-A is our favorite fast food restaurant, has wonderful milk shakes-peach in the summer and amazing Christmas season shakes. The kids play area is enclosed and a great place for moms to connect while children play safely. Their kids' meal toys are also very thoughtful and nice. Good people. Look for Poppa J, the greeter.

Pinto Thai is authentic Thai, with Thai chefs and servers. It is now in a vintage building on East Davis with high ceilings and trendy decor, and nice relaxing atmosphere. It also has a bar. This is one of our favorites. We were in Thailand for several months and this food brings back some good memories. The servers are Thai and also very nice. They have one tv screen with a Thai station and the house music is old style Thai instrumental with pipes. Our favorites are Drunken Noodle and Thai Red Curry- we took photos of Drunken Noodle for you, also Mango Sticky Rice.

We call this the "Amish Store" because of the horse and buggy logo on all their items. It's a great place to get a quick lunch, made to order sandwiches in the back with their freshly cut deli meats and cheeses. It has many pantry items that have been purchased in bulk and divided into smaller containers which we love. Prices of their spices can't be beat. Lake Pelham is adjacent to this property. Graze to Griddle has been our favorite local food truck parked at Death Ridge Brewery on Thursday nights. Wineries

This is our favorite local winery. They have a nice lake with a boardwalk. The house has two tasting rooms and is a cozy, old restored house. The back deck is nice and there is another tasting bar near the deck. The front porch overlooks the lake and vineyard. There is a large backyard with space to play and roam. They have a distillery and a brewery on the property. The brewery is divided into two sections-the left allows children and outside food and the right is adults only Irish Pub. They have seasonal events, so check their website.

A fascinating winery along 211 along the way to Skyline Drive. “The Gray Ghost” was the nickname given to John Singleton Mosby, a brilliant Confederate Cavalry Battalion Commander during the Civil War. The owners are awesome, friendly, like-able and have a wealth of knowledge on the history of the property and the area. The atmosphere is fun and family friendly for “well-behaved children and dogs.” They have food trucks and the space is large and rustic with plenty of outdoor seating. The beer is really good, especially for a new business. There is a beer for all tastes, plenty to choose from. They even have one called, “Closest Thing”, which is the closest thing to the beers we used to drink before craft beer. They also make their own hard cider and have a selection of local wines to choose from. They are open Thursday through Sunday, but check on that because the days and times may change as they grow. During the Civil War, this house, very near the railroad tracks, was used as a hospital for both the Confederate and Union soldiers. The wounded men took charred sticks from the fireplace and began to draw artwork and autographs and political cartoons on the wall. These were covered over with years of paint and layers and layers of wallpaper and long forgotten. On the night before it was to be burned by the fire department, someone was salvaging some of the woodwork, and discovered some writing. The burning of the house was cancelled, and slowly, painstakingly, the layers of paint and paper were removed to reveal rooms full of graffiti. It is fascinating, and a donation gets you in.

My husband and I visited recently and were pleasantly surprised at how well put together the visitor center was! The visitor center seems to lead one on a journey to learn the unfolding of the battle, and the personal stories of the people involved, North and South, soldier, civilians, doctors. We found the stories fascinating and sobering and felt the heaviness of what happened there. There were many artifacts and some audio buttons you could push to hear narrations or short films. Pace yourself to save time for the grand finale-a room with walls covered in large photographs of soldiers who fought there and beneath them the seemingly endless names of men who died there. There are also nice trails and paths to walk with markers showing where Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded, some Confederate trenches and other interesting sites. Both The Wilderness Battlefield and Chancellorsville are near Culpeper on Route 3. If you love history or feel the need to learn about our past struggles as a nation, it is worth going to see these.

Essentials

Right next door to Old Blue, Duke’s is a local icon, selling the bare necessities of life. The owner, John Wayne, “But you can call me Duke”, lives on the property and is a wealth of information on the area and is full of local folklore. He loves history and told me that Old Blue was built where a picket line had been during the Civil War. Duke enjoys chatting with his customers, so a visit next door might take you back to a pleasant memory of unhurried bygone days, or add a colorful new memory of your trip to Culpeper! Duke’s is a typical old Ma and Pa’s store, with an old-time feel, with all the essentials; canned goods, bread, milk, chips, candy, an ice cream cooler and many and varied types of beer, local wine, and even a little fresh produce! He also has a small “made to order” deli with the menu changing frequently. If you don’t want to go to town, or prefer not to give your money to a big box store, consider walking next door and buying locally.

You need a quarter for the cart, which is returned when you return the cart. You need to bring your own bags or purchase inexpensive paper or sturdy plastic for 5 or 10 cents. But all of this keeps the cost down about 30% of what you would pay elsewhere. It's a small store, so you can navigate through quickly, and there is not a multiplicity of choices of any particular item, but they have almost everything you need. Cashiers are so fast! Aldi is where we go first, and if they don't have it, then we go to Martin's.

Lidl is our new competitor of Aldi. Lidl is much larger, and has a bakery, and more of everything, but it does take longer to shop than at little Aldi. You don't have to pay for your shopping cart, but you do have to pay for bags or bring your own, and you do have to pack your own bags.

Saturday mornings, 8:00- noon, usually May-October. When the sun is shining, I love going to the farmer’s market. Fresh local produce, eggs, meat, flowers, arts and home crafted items-you never know what you will find! A shoulder bag will be helpful to carry your treasures. It’s been meeting in the Culpeper Baptist Church parking lot this year.

Our granddaughter had her birthday party at State Climb and I was amazed to see the girls do so well. There is a section with very thick pad and then a higher section for climbing with a harness. They supply climbing shoes and harnesses. I was surprised to find that the cost is by donation!

Our grandchildren love this place, especially on a hot or rainy day. The moms like to have play dates here so they can visit while the kids burn off some energy and have fun. They have “Toddler Tuesdays” discounted and may have other specials.

Our grandchildren, ages 5 and 7 had so much fun here! It’s huge and with so many different energy releasing activities-especially in the winter when kids have been cooped up inside. Fredericksburg is a bit of a drive but there is a lot to see and do there. It is pricey, they paid $17 for 1 1/2 hours for ages 6 and under and $20 for over 6 years in February 2022, but they said it was well worth the splurge.

If you really enjoy a good cup of coffee, this little shop, tucked away in the corner of a plaza is my choice for the best in Culpeper. I got a large ceramic mug of fresh brew Sumatran for under $4. It is smooth; roasted and brewed just right. Don’t judge the place by the humble outside-as soon as you walk through the doors, the coffee aroma is amazing, and the set up is eye-appealing. The young man behind the counter was friendly, courteous and very knowledgeable. Sandwiches are made to order, breakfast or lunch. They cook up a pot of something special, or have a great sandwich on weekdays and it always changes from day to day. I got here too late in the afternoon and they had sold out of the crab cake sandwich. You can follow them on IG to see what weekday lunch they are cooking up.
