Parc naturel d'Učka

Beautiful park with autochtonous aromatic herb plantations: lavender, rosemary, immortelle, sage, calendula, chamomile, mint and pyrethrum. The garden rockery represents a natural habitat for Iris Croatica. Olive grows with traditional native sorts such as busa, rossignola and bjelica. Vineyard with varieties such as Malvasia and Teran. Eco-garden where they grow our own fruit and vegetables. Istrian meadows and their natural plants habitat: many species of the Istrian orchid (Istrian Serapias), butterflies, mushrooms...and forests with their own characteristics and peculiarities such as the white, gray and black hornbeam, medicinal wild plants and berries. A total of 4000 metres of stone walls (drywall), retaining walls and further 4500 metres of walking trails and paths intertwine harmoniously with the Istrian landscape, therefore, they reinforce its monumentality. The main entrance (Portun) ,with its 200 metre long avenue of pyramidal cypresses, is undoubtedly a unique experience. A gigantic fig tree grows miraculously from the centre of a 7 metre deep cave . The tree is estimated to be 120 years old and it is surrounded by a stone amphiteatre which represents an outdoor classroom. The Karst Cave, with its depth of 9 metres, is an ideal place for an original wine and olive oil tasting room, due to its geologic features, minerals, findings, a constant temperature of 12 degrees Celsius throughout the year and finally its polarized light obtained by calcite crystals.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Safari bar near Kamenjak’s southern tip is a beach cabin made from rushes, driftwood and sticks of bamboo. You will feel like you are in lost paradise. With a good choice of sandwiches and cocktails, it’s a great place for afternoon lounging or early evening partying – all visitors to the nature reserve are required to leave by 10pm.

Few years ago Aruba was the central spot of partying in the city of Pula. Today, Aruba is a stylish bar & open club with a beautifull terrace which is during the summer period converted in a relaxing caffe bar. During weekends the place is crowded and offers Dj partying and live concerts of local musicians and bends.

They use their own home made cheese in their dishes which is very tasty and delivered in a huge portion. Rural location, plenty of parking. Cheese shop attached. Vesna is famous and well known in Pula and Istria for their good selection of homemade cheese. Pizzeria is a nice family place where you can eat solid pizza. There is also plenty of toys for kids. Lot of space outside for them to play.

In Aquarium Pula, the richness of the Adriatic Sea is combined in a unique way with centuries long military history of Pula. The aquarium is settled in the 130 year old fortress Verudela, part of the once mighty Austro-Hungarian defence compound Fortress Pula. Today, the fortress is inhabited by 100 species of north and south Adriatic fish, 50 species from tropical seas and fresh waters, as well as fish from Croatian rivers and lakes. Meet sea turtles recovering in the Marine turtle rescue Centre, along with albino Gourami, Horseshoe crab (a living fossil), coral reef sharks, big rays and groupers, scary muraenas, timid mullets and all the other animals that have found their home in rooms, hallways and tunnels once used by soldiers.

East of Giardini is the Roman monument – the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi , one of the points of interest on a sightseeing tour of the city and the reason why there are so many people at Giardini. The “ Golden Gate” was erected between the years 29 and 27 BC by the Sergi family , in honor of three members of the family who held important positions in Pula at that time .

The Temple of Augustus was built in the 2nd century BC and was dedicated to Emperor Augustus and the goddess Roma. It’s been used for many different purposes throughout its long history – a temple, a church, and even a granary. During WWII, it was hit by a bomb that almost completely destroyed it, along with the other two buildings that were part of the complex, but it has been mostly restored to what it was like 2,000 years ago. One of the other structures, The Temple of Diana, is represented on by its back wall. You can take a quick tour of the interior for less than $2 (it’s a small space). The building currently houses some Roman stone and bronze sculptures.

Not far from the Arena is one of the old city gates that was built in the 2nd century AD. It’s called the Twin Gate because there are actually two gates side by side. Rumor has it that the double gates were necessary to allow more townspeople into the city during gladiator fights and other major town events. The gates are very well preserved and open up to a central part of the old town where people still hang out. In fact, it can get pretty crowded during the day when tourists are enjoying the surrounding shops.

Don’t expect to find an ornate interior at this church. It’s not like the intricate catholic cathedrals you find in Italy. Built by the Christians during their persecution, the church is quite minimalistic in design, but the architecture is impressive, nonetheless, and it’s worth a walk-by to check it out.
