Dunster Castle at the top of a steep hill with views to the sea, has fabulous gardens with garden games, playgrounds and an incredible interior and is easily combined with seeing medieval Dunster.

Kilve is a Jurassic coast with fossils in the rocks - my three year old even found a loose ammonite fossil recently. The Rectory Tea Rooms nearby make a perfect stop in the rose gardens and ruins.

A perfect Exmoor hamlet with beautiful vistas. It is the starting point for many marked walks. We love the one to Selworthy Beacon where you might see Exmoor ponies and have views to the sea.

In late January and Febuary, there is a valley of thousands of snowdrops, planted by the Monks of Dunster in the 13th century. Worth the muddy, cold walk. Warm up at Rest and be Thankful Inn.

Signed from the A39, spend the day at Loorna Doone Farm enjoying tea and snacks along the river with children wading. Or you can walk along the river for 50p for complete isolation, bar the sheep.

We love this village with its tea rooms, village green and great playground and isolated pick your own blueberry farm 3 miles up a VERY rough track (not for the faint of heart or those in a posh car).

Greencombe is a 3.5 acre strip of rare and beautiful plants overlooking the Bristol Chanel. Only open from April to July 2-6pm, this is the perfect stop to or from Porlock.

Cleeve Park is a short drive from Butlins. You can buy day or annual passes inexpensively and then escape to the peace of the countryside at night for a fraction of the price of staying at Butlins.

This sweet, sea-front farm has a yummy restaurant, an animal farm for kids, a bouncy castle indoors for rainy days and a farm store and gift-shop to keep everyone happy in all weather.
